About this listen

Lovelorn: Unhappy because of unrequited love.

Micah Watson is lonely. He spends his days writing books, delivering pizza, and searching for love. When he meets Mackenzie McKee at a diner, he instantly falls in love with her. He molds himself into the perfect man for her. But she rejects him - again and again. Tired of the pain and loneliness, Micah finds comfort in an online community full of misogynists....

On the internet, surrounded by anonymous provocateurs, Micah is transformed into a hateful, sadistic misogynist. And he plans on exacting his revenge on everyone who ever hurt him.

Jon Athan, the author behind Lovesick and Maneater, dives into the disturbed mind of a lovelorn man in this extreme horror story about loneliness and rejection, entitlement and vengeance, and love and hatred.

Very, very gruesome

I enjoy Jon Athan's books. He is really good with violence, including killing and all around gruesomeness. The opening of the book with Benjamin and Madison was extremely gruesome how Benjamin went crazy because he wanted her and she did not want him so he killed her by severely mutilating her. He uploaded pictures of her to different sites and sent to several people. Micah sees what he uploaded... Matthew E Berry did a very good job with the narration. Fiction didn't' warp his mind, he warped fiction

Having been a fan of Jonathan's stories I wasn't as impressed with this one compared to his earlier ones. The beginning of the story felt like multiple prologues, and that made me want to see it go a certain way that didn't happen. I was thinking I was getting something different, but got your basic syfy B movie plot that has a quick death to start off and then starts the main story. I understand he was explaining the Insel movement and its followers, but I kept waiting for the actual story which wasn't built up the way I wanted it to be. Have to say I learned about a new minute faction of the world that definitely needs therapy. Overall, I wasn't excited and my initial expectations went away once the actual story started.
I will say that this doesn't need a trigger warning, yes it is graphic, yes it is brutal, yes it touches subjects people don't want to hear, but if you are a horror fan, especially of Jonathan, you have heard all of this before and probably more extreme.
My biggest issue, outside of the gun lingo, was Micha. He is didn’t seem real to me and wasn't developed enough for me to take him seriously. Yes, people like him exist, but I don't think they are created the same way he was. I don’t think his evolution was fleshed out enough and I just heard an angry guy that read blogs like your typical neckbeard. I understand the point of this story isn’t the characters and is more about the plot and graphic violence, but I still want to at least like the characters enough to enjoy the story.
As a big 2nd amendment enthusiast, I had some issues. It sounded more like the guns he referenced were looked up on Wikipedia and then reinforced by naming them constantly. I appreciated the research, which most writers won’t do, but saying the name of the gun constantly and not understanding their function is just as bad. While the writer is in commie run CA with mag limits, a G17 holds 17 rounds, not 10. Also, nobody calls it the John Wick gun, only people who watch too many movies. Jonathan had good information and called stuff correctly, but I felt it was forced and was just researched like every other big word that the average person doesn't know that he had to explain.
Matthew Berry did a great job with the narration. I liked his character voices and really enjoyed the energy he put into the characters. He really helped bring the characters to life and you can really feel their emotions through his narration.

Mixed

First the narration was good and had no issues.
the story was kind of hard for me to get through, I had to do it a bit here and there because it got very cringe at times and I’m not much of a fan of switching perspectives a lot but it wasn’t done to bad in this. But if you want a good horror story that doesn’t hold back this would probably be a good choice just didn’t quite hit home for me.

Well..

You have to be and in the right kind of mood for this type of book. I always tell myself that they are sick and I won't listen to them again. But then I go and wonder what vision of hell on earth will the author dream up this time? No more!

Prepare To Be Black Pilled!!!

Jon Athan once again delivers an incredibly satisfying story that places the reader into the mind of a deranged incel named Micah.

Of course he doesn’t start out that way and we get to be a fly on the wall as rejection and the internet lead our protagonist down a black pilled path of violence.

The narrator, Matthew Berry did a fine job, only flubbing the main character’s name a couple of times and mispronouncing a handful of words. Nothing too distracting.

I highly recommend picking up the novel but be forewarned, Lovelorn is extremely graphic. But isn’t that why we love Jon Athan anyway????

Eerily plausible

This story seems as though it were ripped from the headlines and could be biographical for any number of individuals on the news these day. Well done showing the descent and motivations.

I received a copy of this book at my request in exchange for a fair review.
