About this listen

Mark Murray loves his girlfriend, Rebecca Lucio, but she doesn’t love him. She believes their love has withered away, and she has already fallen for another man, but she struggles to formally end her relationship with Mark. But Mark knows everything already - the lies, the deceit, the cheating. He has a plan to punish Rebecca in the most violent, disgusting way possible. He is going to make her sick...unbelievably sick.

Jon Athan, the author of Dr. Sadist and Scattershot, reinvents the definition of "lovesick" in this disgusting, gag-inducing, and extremely violent horror novel.

Sick and Demented

I would have given it 5 stars had Rebecca deserves it. I do have to say this is one of the most disgusting books I’ve ever read. I enjoyed it but as I said I would’ve enjoyed it more had Rebecca deserved it. The narrator was awesome and I really liked him a lot hope I like more books he has done he was great the writing was also very imaginative and kept me listening but alas she should’ve deserved it she didn’t

I feel dirty for enjoying this book so much.

This book starts with a warning that it’s not for the weak. Saying this book is sick is an understatement. I feel guilty for admitting that I couldn’t stop listening. I don’t know how many times I thought WTF. Brutal revenge. The narrator was perfect. I received this audiobook for free, but I wouldn’t regret using a credit. If you’re not easily offended, it’s worth your time to listen.

Grotesque, Mean Spirited, Original….I love it

The story starts a little slow, you have Mark our main character pining over a girl Rebecca. Watching her at a party and daydreaming. Not sure he is an jncel but he is a beta cuck.
The twist at the party sets off Mark slowly devises a gruesome plan for revenge.
This is a seriously grim and depraved look at love, loss, cheating and jealousy. It all culminates into an unforgettable story with an ending that will keep you up at night.

Brilliant!

At my request, I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Where to begin... this entire piece of art was excellent. What a brave and bold and daring author, as well as the narrator. Right from the start, I had an idea that I was going to love Lovesick. I was NOT disappointed. You could say that this genre is my dirty little secret.

The most disgusting, brutal, grotesque thing I have ever heard. Thrilling and suspenseful. Brilliantly thought out and executed. Absolutely horrific when you consider the ideas in real life, but totally possible. I loved every second of it and will be seeking out the author’s other works.

One man’s literal decent into madness. Beware if you have a weak stomach, enjoy if you love disgust. Don’t take the warnings lightly. 5 stars!!

Mixed feelings on this roller coaster.

There are some parts that got incredibly dull and straight up boring but once it picked back up again it really had me thinking wtf, wtaf a lot, and that’s a lot of what this book is moments of disbelief, shock and more gruesome than hell. And as to the comments about it being “unrealistic” because of how much money he was using that’s dumb, having like 5-10 thousand dollars in savings isn’t that crazy for a cook probably in his 30s or so.
Narration was ok but there was some pronunciation issues here and there especially near the end.
I didn’t dislike it and it was an interesting change of pace I’d give it a shot if you aren’t sure you just might scar yourself a little.

Ever Love Someone Who Hurt You?

Usually when books give me a warning about the graphic nature of a book, I think yeah right, you should read some of the stories I have read. Just like when someone tries to tell me that something is hot, really, try eating some of the things I eat. Well I will tell you that for the average person this is quite spicy and will burn you on the way in and on the way out. This was a disturbing story and gruesome to boot. I have heard plenty of gruesome and disturbing stories and this one was up right up with those. I wouldn’t say this was the most graphic story I have heard, but I did actually have to pause it midway and take a break for something a bit more light hearted. Not something I’m using as an endorsement, but merely a warning for those who can’t handle really sick and twisted stories. I you ever asked yourself, why am I listening to this awful story, this isn’t for you.

The story itself is your basic revenge story amped up on black tar, meth, and a whole bunch of STDs. A lover spurned exacts his revenge in an extremely violent and gory way. I have to hand it to the imagination of the author, the closest thing I can really compare this to is Se7en. Right off the bat, you are thrown into a dark scenario and it just gets darker from there. You get taken to some really quaint places in the neighborhood that really set the scene for the depravity you encounter. None of the story was scary, but you will want to take a shower after and maybe rinse, lather, and repeat a few times. The only thing the bothered me was the seemingly endless supply of cash that Mark had for a burger flipper.

While the main focus is really on the shock value of the scenes, you do get enough of the characters to know that neither of them are really good. Typically, with revenge stories I like there to be at least one redeeming character who you can latch onto, not so much here. I couldn’t sympathize with any of the characters and while none of them started out evil, Mark definitely gets there. While I liked his resolve and psychotic ways, the further his plan progressed the more I drifted away from him and felt sorry for Rebecca. By the time the story ended, nothing surprised me and while odd, I didn’t quite mind it. It was a mixed bag of emotions on a nauseating ride.

Matthew Berry did a good job with the narration. I liked his narrator voice and his subtle changes in tone for the characters. As I didn’t think the characters were meant to be the focal point, I’m glad there wasn’t over the top character voices. Impressed with Berry's ability to read this type of story with a steady voice. I think he told the story how it should have been and with his confident straight forward voice,

Pitch-black entertainment

I first signed up to become an Audiobook Boom member several months ago. I have perused the audiobook options every so often and have sought out something that perked my interest. The first book that I asked to read was Lovesick. I was given this free review copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. When I downloaded the book I was scared to press play. The cover and the synopsis for a long while begged me to turn away and listen to something lighter instead. I was dreading allowing something like this disturbing into my system. Eventually, the morbid curiosity that led me to choose this book was what allowed me to press play and listen to the entirety of the book. The book's general plot revolves around a man who decides to act drastically after his girlfriend's infidelity. The book is fortunately and unfortunately exactly what is promised on the box. The story revels in the grotesque and perversions of its characters. The voice actor works perfectly as the lead character. Leaning into the grimy aesthetic of the book and allowing the characters to breathe and be as unlikeable or as desperate as the plot needs them to be. At first, this made me uncomfortable but once I began to view the story as a pitch-black comedy and began to decipher some of the author's intentions I began to enjoy the book and allow it to seep into me disturbing me and making me chuckle with its absurdity. At one point I even craved for the plot to become more devilishly perverse. Where the book lost some points for me is that I never felt that it never subverted my plot expectations. This is the result of not fleshing out other characters as much as the lead and giving them little to do. The book is focused on the lead character's arc and did not give me a more fully-formed world. I really wish to have known more about the female character's thoughts and feelings throughout the book and would have liked more action from her, as the plot would permit. Overall, once I accepted this book as a dark comedy, I did not regret the rollercoaster ride that is Lovesick.

Shook!

This is going to be one of those books that will forever stay with me, you know, one of those books that pop into your head every now and then or one of those books you'll bring up occasionally. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean this in a negative way, I LOVED this book! I'm a true horror and gore fan and this sits on top of the list along with my favorites. It's gory and made my skin crawl and left me saying "WTF?!" countless times throughout the book. It definitely puts a new meaning to lovesick, this guy is nuts! If you're into gore, ya'll need this one in your collection!!
