About this listen

Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot. They’re the Guardians of the Galaxy, turning a tidy profit as heroes for hire - or they will be if Peter Quill can get his act together. After he botches the most critical part of their latest mission - getting paid - his newly assembled crew is close to ditching him for good. Now he needs a big payday, fast.

When an old acquaintance shows up offering a whole lot of units for a field trip to Peter’s past, it’s a no-brainer. Thirteen years ago, Peter fought the Chitauri alongside the Resistance on Mercury to prevent an invasion of Earth. Now it’s time to go back. The old Resistance base has a squatter, and it’s up to the Guardians to “gently escort” them off the premises...and unmask a wartime traitor while they’re at it.

But war is heavy, man, and the Galactic War screwed up each of the Guardians in their own special ways. The brand-new team is barely hanging together, and the mission brings up all kinds of bad memories. It’s make or break time for the Guardians, and they do so love breaking things....

Just hopefully not each other.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is an ever-expanding film franchise that includes both movies and television series based on characters from Marvel comic books. At 27 movies and counting, the MCU shows no signs of slowing down. With six new movies scheduled to release between 2022 and 2023, and a whole slew of new TV shows in the works, it can be hard for even the most devoted fans to keep track of everything.

I listened to this fresh off finishing the game and I enjoyed every minute of it. It’s probably better to play the game first to better appreciate it but it was a self contained story that does not require prior knowledge. Peter Quill and his lovable family of misfits take on a job that leads down memory lane to the war 12 years earlier. Of course not all goes according to plan and it’s only partly Peter’s fault. Really.

Perfect game prequel

Most video game tie ends just wanna sell you something. But this one cares about telling you a story and adding to the story in the video game. If you can tell how much thought love and care went in to each character and making sure there are no contradictions when it comes to the game. It perfectly sets up the first level in the game, and just the game as a whole. Loved the story.
Also the performance, is we so freaking good. The way he did every voice was great. I feel like you could tell he was having fun with it and gave his all.
So if you’re wondering if this book is worth it, it definitely is!

Book is great (besides a slow start) and the audiobook really helps make the characters come to life. I highly recommend listening to the audiobook for this one as the voice actor goes above and beyond duty with all of his different voices and amazing delivery of lines. Spectacular work

It really does well leaning into the characters backstory. As well setting up more depth to the video game.

A solid prequel

This story has a strong comic book tying instead of a MCU link but the narrator vocals are close to the movie characters. So while it does depart from the MCU and use Richard Rider aka Nova who had yet been introduced to the MCU its s great story, funny, with all the things you expect in a Guardians story.

Nice Guardian story.

Overall, I adored the game, and this book did a fantastic job of setting up the war that is referenced in the game itself. But the story is told through two parts; interlude from the past aka the war, and Present aka before the game starts. I loved the tension and the kysetery behind the war and the resolution it came too. But you could tell in the Presents chapters they weren't allowed much maneuverability with personalities of the guardians which hinders character development a bit. However, the story behind the war is interesting enough of a read as a build up to the game. I would check it out, you've got this.. probably.

Worth a read?
