About this listen
Recipient of a Nautilus Silver Award 2018 and sister book to Burning Woman (Nautilus Silver 2017) and Creatrix (Nautilus Silver 2019).
This audacious questioning of the current medical system’s ability to deal with the modern epidemic of chronic illness, combines a raw personal memoir of sickness and healing, woven through with voices of dozens of other long-term sick women of the world and a feminine cultural critique that digs deep into the roots of patriarchal medicine. Pearce takes us from its ancient Greek roots, through the influences of the Enlightenment and Christianity, the wholesale destruction of the wise woman tradition and Western colonial destruction of native medicines to the current technocratic, capitalist model of medicine.
Medicine Woman asks the uncomfortable questions that our culture refuses to face:
- Why chronic illness, mental health issues, medical prescriptions and costs are rising exponentially.
- Why women are the major sufferers of the modern epidemic of auto-immune conditions.
- Why women are twice as likely to be medicated for depression.
- Why women tend to be taken less seriously by medical professionals.
Voicing a deep yearning for a broader vision of what it means to be human than our current paradigm allows for, calling on an ancient archetype of healing, Medicine Woman, to re-vision how we can navigate sickness and harness its transformational powers in order to heal. Packed with dozens of healing arts exercises and medicine questions to help integrate body and mind in the healing process. Like Burning Woman, this book promises initiation by transmission, reconnecting us directly with the soul of healing.
With a special introduction exclusive to the audiobook placing Medicine Woman in the context of a global pandemic. Please note that a small number of short passages in the original text do not feature in the recording.

Nautilus award winning Burning Woman is a breath-taking and controversial woman’s journey through history - personal and cultural - on a quest to find and free her own power. Uncompromising and all-encompassing, Pearce uncovers the archetype of the burning women of days gone by - Joan of Arc and the witch trials, through to the way women are burned today in cyber bullying, acid attacks, shaming and burnout, fearlessly examining the roots of feminine power - what it is, how it has been controlled, and why it needs to be unleashed on the world during our modern burning times.

Story
Western folklore and mythology are rife with brilliantly creative, fulfilled, feisty, and furious role models for aging women, despite our culture's focus on youthfulness. In her exciting new book, mythologist and psychologist Sharon Blackie explores these archetypes, presenting them in a way sure to appeal to contemporary women. Drawing inspiration from these examples, women can reclaim midlife as a liberating, alchemical moment rich with possibility and their elder years as a path to dynamic power.

Story
Everyone has a sensitive side, but nearly one in three people have the genes to be more sensitive than others—both physically and emotionally. These are the people who pause before speaking and think before acting; they tune in to subtle details and make connections that others miss. Whether introverted or extroverted, they tend to be bighearted, creative, and wired to go deep, yet society tells them to hide the very sensitivity that makes them this way. These are the world’s “highly sensitive people,” and Sensitive is the book that champions them.

Story
Enchantment. By Dr. Sharon Blackie’s definition, a vivid sense of belongingness to a rich and many-layered world, a profound and whole-hearted participation in the adventure of life. Enchantment is a natural, spontaneous human tendency - one we possess as children, but lose, through social and cultural pressures, as we grow older. It is an attitude of mind which can be cultivated: the enchanted life is possible for anyone. It is intuitive, embraces wonder, and fully engages the mythic imagination - but it is also deeply embodied in ecology, grounded in place and community.

Nearly 70 percent of Americans are on at least one prescription drug; more than half take two. In Canada, every fifth person has high blood pressure. In Europe, hypertension is diagnosed in more than 30 percent of the population. And everywhere, adolescent mental illness is on the rise. So what is really “normal” when it comes to health?

What is autism: a lifelong disability or a naturally occurring form of cognitive difference akin to certain forms of genius? In truth, it is both of these things and more - and the future of our society depends on our understanding it. Wired reporter Steve Silberman unearths the secret history of autism, long suppressed by the same clinicians who became famous for discovering it, and finds surprising answers to the crucial question of why the number of diagnoses has soared in recent years.

Her Passion and Insight
I am grateful to have found a book that speaks to my existence as a woman who has not only been diagnosed with an autoimmune condition, but has also experienced the lack of receptiveness by the medical community into the connection of my cycle, my environment, and my psyche to its ebb and flow of flares and remission.
Thank you, Lucy Pearce, for acknowledging and giving credence to all that you have.
