About this listen

New York Times best-selling author Julie Garwood takes listeners from New Orleans' exclusive Garden District to the backwoods of Louisiana's mysterious bayou country in an unforgettable novel of passion and suspense that cuts straight to the heart.

When esteemed Justice Department attorney Theo Buchanan is struck ill at a New Orleans gala, Dr. Michelle Renard works fast to save his life. Soon, Theo finds himself in a race to save her when Michelle is targeted by a deadly crime ring. They call themselves the Sowing Club, a devious foursome driven by greed to accumulate millions in a secret bank account. Now they're dead set on silencing Michelle, who might know the secret behind the killing of one of their wives. Dodging a world-class hit man and a band of cunning criminals, Michelle and Theo walk a narrow path between passion and survival.

Whereas book 1 was too dark and twisted, without enough humor or action to balance things out, I found this book 2 to be the perfect balance of mystery and fun. The family interactions and an entire small town in cahoots to lure Theo into staying on as a coach all added to the fun. The romance is more on the sweet than steamy side, with fairly tame and sometimes silly interactions. Although it was charming, I never quite bought the idea of a doctor who could be so terrible at cooking, accessorizing or flirting.
Finally, I agree that the accents took a bit to get used to, but if you come at it for the fun of it, the exaggerated drawl adds to the comedy. Bump the speed up a skosh and this is a lively listen.

Fun and intrigue in the Bayou

Would you listen to Mercy again? Why?

I would but the accent she used for all the Louisiana characters (Marianne and the dad) was grating. Like so bad I'm sure I missed some story because I had to skip.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Mercy?

I loved all the Michelle and Theo scenes.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The Louisiana accent for pretty much everything. When the club members were talking when she said "character said" her voice went suddenly flat. Very annoying.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed.

Story was great but the accent she used was awful

I really enjoyed the story, which is a good thing, or I might not have made it through. The reader's accents were horrendous, and really lessened my enjoyment of the book.

Good story

I love all of Julie Garwood’s books but have to confess this one is my favorite of hers. The humor and banter are awesome. The characters are real and fun to “be with”. I was so glad to find out she did a stories on Noah John Paul, too. You can read her books in any order but if you are wanting to put an order to any of them do this one before Noah’s and John Paul’s.

Favorite in the series

This was a great love story; a funny warm and charming glimpse into a small town in Louisiana; a mystery that kept me guessing, and was brilliantly narrated by Christina Traister. It had all the magic of a Julie Garwood historical in a contemporary setting.

Terrific in every way

If you could sum up Mercy in three words, what would they be?

Hot, arrogant, hot!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Theo... all the Buchanan men are so hot, my poor husband is envious of the fictitious men.

What about Christina Traister’s performance did you like?

This is the second narration I have listen to, the first one was so bad it didn't even deserve one star, however she did a good job with this one.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Theo buys the fence for that sweet little boy.

Any additional comments?

This is one of the best books. Was afraid the narration was ruin it but she did a good job.

Great story. Loved the narrator. When the main characters met in the hotel lobby I knew I was hooked. Superb
