About this listen

In feudal England, Elizabeth Montwright barely escaped the massacre that destroyed her family and exiled her from her ancestral castle. Bent on revenge, she rode again through the fortress gates, disguised as a healer...to seek aid from Geoffrey Berkley, the powerful baron who had routed the murderers.

He heard her pleas, resisted her demands, and vowed to seduce his beautiful subject. Yet as Elizabeth fought the warrior's caresses, love flamed for this gallant man who must soon champion her cause...and capture her spirited heart!

A Favorite

Of my close to one thousand Audible titles, this would be in the top ten. I have listened to it hundreds of times and it still makes me smile. For the most part — Except for the rather graphic murder that takes place when when the castle is captured , it has a gentle humor. The hero is a big blustery character who was raised in the king’s castle from the age of six without a woman’s influence. The heroine was raised as her father’s son. This creates some misconceptions and conflicts.

Decent story, but ruined by the weak narrator

I've read the story in the past. It is a little slow to start but it's still a decent story. Somehow the narrator makes the hero sound like a weak, feminine character.

I am a huge Julie Garwood fan. I would recommend most of her books, even though some of the audiobooks don't have the best voice actors. but this one is now at the bottom of my list.

I Liked It!

This book has all the elements that make up a good Historical Romance story, although the sexual and arguing scenes were a little over the top for me.

I thought Ann Flosnik did an excellent job. In my opinion she's a good actress and I can't understand anyone giving her negative reviews. Her ability to change her voice, accurately portraying the different characters each time they speak, is truly a gift. It's very hard for a women to sound like one man, much less several different men...and women. A narrator can make or break a story, and Ann Fosnik's performance makes this story.

Good story, terrible voice

I enjoyed the story immensely but could barely stand the voice. It was aggravating to say the least. There is a sometimes nasal, sometimes guttural sound that grated.

All in all, an okay listen.

Strong characters, both emulate the title.

The characters and the story were engaging, but the audio performance was weak. I would have preferred that the uncle was punished for his part in the murders, too. With another narrator this book could be 5-stars.

Good book but not my favorite by this author.

I love most of Julie Garwood’s older books, this was her first and not one of my favorites but still good one. While I would re read The Bride, Saving Grace and most of Julie Garwood others, this book is a one time read. You can tell the author gets better with time on her latter books. Narrator was not the best, but as the story continues it gets easier to ignore her.

Love The Book But Narration, Not So Much

This narrator seems to think that all men speak like Count Chocula. I have found that speeding up the audio makes her listenable, not great, but listenable.
I love Julie Garwood's stories.

Great story, horrible narration

Great story but will never purchase one with narrator again, she reads to slow and her voices are almost laughable
