About this listen

Of all the dukes in England, Jered Marcus Benton, the Duke of Bradford, was the wealthiest, most handsome - and most arrogant. And of all London’s ladies, he wanted the tender obedience of only one: Caroline Richmond.

She was a ravishing beauty from Boston, with a mysterious past and a fiery spirit. Drawn to the powerful duke, undeterred by his presumptuous airs, Caroline was determined to win his lasting love. But Bradford would bend to no woman - until a deadly intrigue drew them enticingly close. Now, united against a common enemy, they would discover the power of the magnificent attraction that brought them together…a desire born in danger, but destined to flame into love!

A So-So story & Anne Flosnik's voice

This book was ok, there was nothing special about it. I like Julie Garwood and this wasn't my favorite. The male character is a narcissistic macho man without many endearing qualities. When the story finally reveals why he is the way he is (self absorbed & emotionally unavailable) all i could think of was, COME ON! The female lead is likeable enough but had she really been the independent, strong willed female her character is sold to be, she would have left the Duke of Bradford about 1/2 through the book. So in between all this, there is chemistry & mystery and the story moves along. I believe I would have enjoyed this book more if it weren't for Anna Flosnik's voice. I've listened to Little Bee and a number of other books narrated by her and her enunciation of what sounds like every single syllable, well perhaps just the last syllabel is grating. I know my opinion is not in majority with audible listeners. I would have enjoyed this book with a little less Flosnik.

Couldn't listen to this lifelong favorite

I know that listening tastes are subjective, and I know there are tons of romance readers/listeners who enjoy Anne Flosnik as a narrator. But I can't stand listening to her. The guttural way she does the men's voices combined with the overly breathy way she ends sentences and does the female voices grates on my nerves. In the future, I'll be skipping books narrated by her. Which is unfortunate, because she does the narration for several of my favorite historical-romance authors.

Average but enjoyable ...easy listen nice HEA

Would you try another book from Julie Garwood and/or Anne Flosnik?

Yes, I love Garwood's historical romances. It seems I have no choice in trying more Flosnik....she seems to be the most used narrator....but one of my least favorite. :(

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

This isn't one of my favorites of Garwood's but it was enjoyable and I liked the overall concept of the story. I felt like the characters were well developed and the supporting characters were great (especially Milford) ...the romance growth was done well too. What I thought was lacking was the development of the "suspense element" of the storyline. At times I forgot Caroline was even in danger.....then all of a sudden we are inundated with the "who done it" and why all in one chunk of time. I think it would have added to the story if the mystery and suspenseful elements were more interspersed and sprinkled across the whole book.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Every time she said "Boston" or "father" I wanted to scream! Other than that I guess I'm just getting used to Anne Flosnik. She is good with female voices but makes the men sound pompous and arrogant......which in this case was quite appropriate for Bradford.

Any additional comments?

Bradford was hard to like. I still don't know if I like him. It ended up being a nice HEA and I did like the book....but Bradford just said some things and did something's I had a hard time wrapping my head around.

Horrible narrator

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No, I couldn't finish it because I found the narrator too irritating. I don't understand why this woman narrates so many books when she has such an annoying voice!!

Not Julie Garwood Quality

I LOVE Julie Garwood and wish more of her books were available. But this one did not live up to standards. Story was slow and characters were not as compelling. Not crazy about the narrator either.
