About this listen

After four centuries of peace, the Cygnus Realm is rotting from within. Decadent and obsessed with pageantry and rank, the Messenger Corps is ripe with corruption, cowardice, and greed.

The Realm is now run by a pit of vipers. Their leader Darius Spann is a rare combination of vanity and ability—but only to a point. For Spann is a parade ground soldier who is only good at looking the part, rather than waging a galactic war against ancient enemies.

For years, pilots who merely looked like soldiers were adequate. They filled the mechs. They filled roles. They supported Spann and his genetic offshoot of pure-blooded warriors known as the Superba.

Spann's dream of absolute power ends with a single, crushing blow as a new enemy strikes at the Realm, leaving no survivors—followed by a mad dash to find fighters who can stand up in the old ways, using the mechs gifted to humanity by their oldest allies.

Even in the midst of war, there is hope.

On a backwater world, a young man will find that destiny has much more in store for him than a life of farming, and his enemies aren't always out there in the black, waiting to strike. His most lethal foes are the very people sworn to protect the Realm, for their failure has brought disaster to the known stars, one battle at a time.

Can one young pilot save the Realm from itself? Fly with the Messenger as he connects with the past to win the future in a war for nothing less than all the stars.

The Next Generation

When I first saw this book hanging out in Audible, I thought let's see what the synopsis says. Well, it made me curious! I have listened to extensions of original series that I have really enjoyed, and they have usually not disappointed me!! This book is no different!! The characters are all new - although there are similarities to the original series characters! That was not too surprising considering that the originals were considered legends with all that they accomplished - and there would need to be some justification for the main character to take control of the Archetype! The basis for this new continuation of the original series hits home - political corruption!! The original altruistic founders of a movement, country, company usually have a vision - BUT somewhere down the line that vision becomes corrupted. And that's where we are at with this story - and it just feels good where Chaney, Maggert, and Seguin take us!!!
If you enjoyed the original series, then purchase this book and continue your enjoyment - you will not be disappointed!!!

Pretty good but…

Sometimes an author does such a good job at portraying the antagonist, that it makes the book not an enjoyable ext. That is the issue I have here. I hated the antagonist so much that I stopped enjoying the book.

Meh

It was ok. Very stereotypical. Farmboy finds an ancient and powerful weapon and is thrust into being the hero. Internal mustache twisting schemers and external faceless overbearing evil alien bad guys. The only thing not there was a mentor figure that gets killed off to provide drive for the hero.

Now it is the first book, and it's a shortish one like most scifi series books, so maybe we'll get a more in depth story in the fallow up installments.
