I really wanted to like this book

Any additional comments?
First, this was not a horrible book. On a lot of levels, it succeeded. However, be warned that much of the events towards the end of this listen will make you shake your head.

I love mystery's and even though you know who the bad guy is pretty early on, I stuck with it because there was enough interest to make me want to see the story unfold. Then the ending happened.

Never mind that it ends on a cliffhanger (of sorts), but the people towards the end started doing things that were counter-intuitive to how you would expect them to act based on previous events. Those last couple of chapters were hard to take.

The narration was good but every once in a while her sentence rhythm was off. It was jarring at times but not enough to make me stop listening.

Easy Listen

What did you love best about Miranda's Fortune?

Miranda was a young, but strong character. Youth vs adults. Good vs bad. We are trained as youngsters to trust adults, but that is not always the case.

What did you like best about this story?

Miranda navigated her troubles well. Good always wins in the end.

Have you listened to any of Nano Nagle’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

The narration was smooth and easy to follow. The narrator distinguished the many different characters' voices well.

Miranda's Fortune

"Miranda's Fortune
: H E Joyce

The publisher's summary caught my attention. We have an orphaned girl sent to a distant boarding school, her favorite teacher leaves suddenly and new head seems to dislike her instantly. That sets up a good plot, enter mysterious characters, strange happenings, and lots of suspense mixed with teenage angst. This was a good listen, with some unexpected twists.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. I almost always enjoy a good UK accent, Nano Nagle provided just that.

Predictable...

I think the targeted audience for this book is the literal young adult. If you’re an adult that enjoys YA, such as myself, then Miranda’s Fortune will be very predictable. I’m still giving this book 4 stars because it is by no means bad, but an older audience might not enjoy it to its full extent. It is also perhaps a little bit too British for my liking.

The narration is great with only one downfall: sometimes the narrator is literally yelling, and it is so loud and so shrill in my unexpectant ears that it makes me flinch, especially with headphones on. Other than that, I think Nano did a wonderful job and I would not mind listening to more books read by her.

Thank goodness for the end

I mean that in both that I was happy the end finally came to this story, and that it totally surprised me. So much so that it almost earned another star. However, it is a pet peeve of mine to have the characters be all good or all evil. This just doesn't happen and it makes the story predictable and drag. That's what this story did ...until the end. I cannot say I'd eagerly listen to a second installment, but I would be curious enough to try it. I thought the narrator did a fabulous job. She was easy on my ears and did justice to what she was given.
I was gifted this audio book in exchange for an honest review.

Book was definitely easier on the ears

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes, over the narration.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I thought the story was great. Mystery, suspense, nice portrayal of teens and adults and the roles they can play.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Nano Nagle?

Probably not. Ms. Nagle's narration was off. There is definitely potential. She was able to distinguish the cast of characters. Unfortunately, the jarring spikes in volume, and faltering of delivery threw off the narration. It sometimes felt like I was watching Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde due to the volume differences between the various characters

Any additional comments?

I very much enjoyed the story (written). I look forward to reading more.

TITLE SAYS IT ALL

Right from the first chapter I figured Miranda was loaded and her Aunt was after the fortune. OOPS SPOILER! This book is the perfect balance of murder, mystery, and humor. A good old fashion story that has you falling in love with the characters. It kind of reminded me of the movie Matilda. A sweet and innocent girl gets sent away to a school by her mean aunt who doesn't want her. At school she finds her favorite loving, caring teacher has been replaced by an evil woman who seems to be targeting her.
