About this listen

A lady in disguise.... A rogue out for revenge....

What better way to escape an abusive fiancé and a tyrannical mother than by masquerading as the male secretary to the most infamous scientist in the land? Davina Benwick can’t think of a single one.

But pretending to be a man is hard work, especially around her employer. He’s as charming as he is eccentric, and Davina can’t help but fall for him. Not only does he think she’s a man, however - he’s hell-bent on marrying another. What’s a lady to do?

Julian Hirst doesn’t have time to be distracted by his foppish new secretary, not when there are more important things on his to-do list. Number one: Finish his greatest invention. Number two: Exact revenge on an old enemy.

Neither project is going well. And to add insult to injury, when Julian discovers his secretary’s secret, he starts to have feelings for the little deceiver. That was definitely not on his list. One of his plans is about to go up in smoke...quite possibly literally.

Loved the book. Loved the characters. Loved the back and forth. Loved the language. This was my first Maggie Fenton book and I cannot wait for the next one.
And the narrator, Caroline Holmes, is pitch perfect!

So much fun!

I love this story. It has everything in it. The absent minded tinkerer who cannot see the love of his life hidden beneath men’s frivolous clothing leads to hysterical moments. Her intellect and courage keeps him alive during more than one adventure. The path to their HEA is fraught with ugliness from the past and it makes their love story more heartwarming. I didn’t care for the narrator’s voices, especially the one she used for the main characters. She made Davina sound waspish and totally unappealing. I would have stopped listening, but the story was too good to give up on the book.

Awesome tale!

Maggie Fenton writes very enjoyable books with somewhat eccentric characters who end up in funny situations. The plots turn basic tropes upside down or sideways and they are definitely not boring. I am never able to wait for the audio but having read the book version never diminishes my enjoyment when I finally get to listen.

Another funny, well written book by Maggie Fenton

Loved Maggie’s latest audiobook. Miss Benwick is a courageous character that fights an abusive parent and fiancé, a system that suppresses women, and her own self doubt to find freedom and happiness. Mr Hurst doesn’t need so much reforming as he needs to use his “brain box” in a more constructive way. Something Miss Benwick happily helps him to do that brings them both pleasure and happiness. Can’t wait for Maggie Fenton’s next audiobook.

Maggie Fenton at her best!

The plot is well-conceived, but the characters are so nicely done. I will probably listen to this again. Maggie Fenton, you are a good novelist!

Wonderful characters!

This book was good, but the heroine suffered some violence. The book opened up with her having a black eye from her idiot betrothed. The hero's best friend knocked her out by hitting her on the head then later shot her in the side (she got in the way. He was actually trying to shoot the fool hero). The heroine was literally the hero. She saved the hero's life several times throughout the book. The so-called hero was a wealthy womanizer and a sleepwalker from the rookeries out for vengeance for his mother's death. He did not declare his love for the heroine until she took a bullet for him. Not crazy about the fact that he took her virginity and the location either.

Not Bad
