About this listen

A Marriage of Convenience

Such is the agreement forged between Lady Jessica Stanton and Simon Warland, Earl of Northcote. Jessica needs a husband strong enough to protect her inheritance from her avaricious stepbrother. Simon needs money to restore the family legacy his father squandered. United by necessity, emotional attachment isn’t part of the deal.

An Unexpected Passion

Yet once the reluctant newlyweds are living under the same roof, Simon can’t ignore the startling intellect, gentle strength, and graceful beauty Jessica keeps so carefully hidden from the world. And Jessica is intrigued to discover Simon’s formidable temper masks a kind, noble heart. But when Simon’s true motive for their marriage is revealed, Jessica is devastated by his betrayal. Because, despite her best intentions, she is falling in love with her husband. And love is the last thing either of them wants - though it may be exactly what they need.

Not a " Carn't put down until finished"

Liked the idea of the storyline if written with more depth, not angry & suspect attitude from main male character, got a bit over the top at times, it's like yep got his issue's let's get on with story. More research necessary on the time period, some aspects in story were not of the time period, being correct in time period does add depth to the overall story, your there in it, so you wish to experience it correctly. Overall, ok, liked some aspects of story but wouldn't re-listen to it.

loved this book

If you could sum up Silent Revenge in three words, what would they be?

Great story idea

What did you like best about this story?

The characters were brought to life and it was an enjoyable story.

What about Rosalyn Landor’s performance did you like?

Loved the narrator. Landor manages to capture each character and gives them a quality of their own. You can differentiate between each character easily.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No it was just an enjoyable book to listen to.

Any additional comments?

I agree with one of the reviews when they mention deaf people and the inability of the main character to converse as she did. However overlooking this the story line was good and a bit different to the norm in some ways.

Kept my interest

I like this book because it had a pot and it took you through step-by-step what happens in the story and why it's happening . Good story.

Exciting Story

Okay, let's get the negative stuff out of the way. The largest problem with this story is that the female protagonist, Lady Jessica Stanton, is able to speak & navigate the waters of high society w/out anyone having any idea that she's deaf. It's hard to believe that she can speak without any accent betraying her deafness. BUT, if you can put that aside I think you'll find this novel to be a real treat. Laura Landon isn't skimpy with the twists, turns, and action scenes that make fiction so exciting. Featuring a resourceful woman, deranged step-brother, conniving mistress, and fallen aristocrat, this novel's cast of characters has all the makings of an exciting love story.

When Lady Stanton is told by her friend and solicitor that she must marry in less than a week, it sets off a chain of events that land her in a marriage with the one man she would not have chosen for herself. But, as with all the historical romance novels we love, a series of attacks & mutual misunderstandings ultimately lead them to each other's arms, and ultimately each other's hearts.

Self Pity, Misunderstandings, (and Spoiler Alert!) Abound

This story has quite an interesting premise.

The h is neither unattractive or overweight or a bluestocking. She is deaf. She has learned to read lips so is vocal and carries her part of the story very well. Because of the sad treatment of the disabled in this time period, she has passed herself off as hearing and lives in dread of anyone finding out.

The H is a bitter man who marries her to save his inheritance and a very well founded revenge against the H’s brother That particular plot has been done a thousand and 1 times, but is interesting in this story.

I took away two stars for the plot because the constant misunderstandings and miscommunication got on my last nerve. The h would read lips and instead of discussing it, go on for pages with self pity and fear…even when the H is there trying to discover the reason for her anger.

He is just as silly and instead of explaining to the h the reason for the gossip, he gets mad with her and tells her it has nothing to do with her and to leave it alone. Even though the gossip is about his supposed love for a woman from his past who married his father instead of him and whom he actually hates, not loves.

Arg!

But I hung in there because I just love Rosalyn Landor and would listen to her narrate the phone book. And in the end I’m glad I did. The ending was predictable but with an interesting spin that I really liked.

I will give this author another try, because I did like parts of the book very much. But if it’s full of stupid misunderstandings and miscommunication just for the sake of adding pages…

Loud Angst

This book had the potential to be excellent, but Jessica got on my last nerve. The plot is intriguing. Jessica just jumps to so many conclusions. She went into a marriage of convenience, but whined about Simon not loving her and about a mistress. So annoying all the way to the end. Way too much false angst and jealousy. I struggled to relate to Jessica. Simon was a bit too aggressive at times and I wondered what happened to his malaria.

I do recommend the book because the writing is well done, but ONLY if you enjoy lots of angst.

Nice book but not WOW

I enjoyed this book. I think what ever Rosalyn Landor narrates I'll enjoy, with her performances she improves the book.
This is my first book for this author. I liked her style of writing, simple yet a bit sparkLESS.
I miss the the spark quality that makes your heart ache that I find in Lisa Kleypas's historical romances :( I think this is the problem, that I end up comparing all the historical romances to LK.
Having said this, it's a solid book with nice story and phenomenal performance.
Enjoy it :)

An Unexpected Love Match. Mystery + Love + Sorrow

The book goes from one mystery to another, always leaving you on the edge of your seat waiting for the next issue to resolve itself (in a good way). From the big secret, to where Jessie will end up, to the antithesis of the story you will love the book and have strong emotions throughout. You will love the main characters, sometimes hate their decisions, feel sorry for everyone involved, and writhe in horror at the villain(s).

Overall this is a happy story. The ending leaves you wanting more of the characters but unlike many books in this genre, it does not leave you hanging with loose threads. You will be contented with the ended and just hoping for the follow up.

I love not only the story, but the description of the scenery, love, and ball gowns!

I finished this book in two days. It's that good. It is one of those books you just can't stop.

This is one of my new favorites on Audible. The author and narrator pair exceptionally well together. I will be looking up more of their books as soon as I am done writing this review.

If you enjoyed this book, I have a few similar recommendations: The countess, The Husband Hunt, The Selection, The Elite, The False Princess, The Amelia Peabody Series, and How to Dance with a Duke. I think these stories all have wonderful narrators, excellent story lines and a similar feeling to them. So if you like this book you should like those books. They are all mystery/love stories that evoke deep emotion and love for the characters. I prefer stories that I can't entirely guess the ending, falling in love with the characters, and especially books with a witty repertoire.

Silent Revenge

What did you like best about Silent Revenge? What did you like least?

the plot was good/ that although the hero was a strong figure throughout the book at the end he missed the mark and all that build up of intelligence that was accredited to him he miss major signs in the end of the book

Have you listened to any of Rosalyn Landor’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I enjoy Rosalyn, I have since looked up other books that she has read to see if I might be interested in them
