About this listen

Scotland Yard Superintendent Duncan Kincaid and Sergeant Gemma James are sent to suburban Surrey to investigate the murder of a high-ranking police officer. Alastair Gilbert was bludgeoned to death in his kitchen, and the list of potential suspects is long--the man's arrogance earned him widespread enmity both in the village where he lived, and in police circles. But Duncan and Gemma must put aside their personal feelings--for the victim, as well as for each other--to solve the most troubling case either has faced.

Great Narrator

The narrator does a great job with this very British police procedural. I found this interesting, and I couldn't guess the murderer. Usually, I can.

Came for the free new mystery, stayed for the lead characters

The mysteries are very good in this series but I require more than good plotting. This series also has interesting locations but, most of all, engaging leads. I will definitely follow them to their next case. Thank you, Audible, for reviving this series. Looking ahead I see different narrators. I hope they will preserve Duncan’s seductive tone. Irresistible.

Good but nothing special. Would recommend.

This kept me enthralled most of the time. The narrator was OK. I may be biased though because I prefer female narrators. I guessed the big twist very early on so it wasn’t that exciting. Overall a decent British cop mystery.

One loose end

The story is well written and the narrator is good. If you haven’t listened to British novels there are words used that may be unfamiliar. Be sure to look them up because they are used in other British novels as well. I don’t like spoilers but there is one loose end. Hopefully it will be answered further in the series.

The Vain, The Powerful, The Dead

The fourth in the series is a very good installment, bringing Superintendent Duncan Kincaid and Sergeant Gemma James to Surrey to investigate the murder of a fellow Scotland Yard high ranking officer, Alastair Gilbert. Discovered bludgeoned to death in his own kitchen, Alastair Gilbert was a man disliked by many . . . and mourned by few. With a large number of would-be killers, Kincaid and Gemma had their work cut out for them, and the close-knit community was not offering much information. This interesting tale kept me listening until the wee hours, as the two together and individually went in search of information that would eventually lead them to an answer. Kincaid's visits to the healer/massage therapist were some of the best parts and I found myself laughing at times, and saddened at others, as he loosened up and began talking about his own past and relationships with her. Getting to know the people in the village, with all their hang ups added to the suspect list, but also made for a well-rounded story. The tension between Kincaid and Gemma, ever present, was difficult to bear . . . and I was hoping for a resolution the whole way through. Excellent resolution to the murder case . . . and hopeful on the Kincaid and Gemma front as well. 😊

This being the 4th book in the Kincaid and James series, I have to say I'm hooked. Can't wait for the next one.

Human Struggles

A very good police story full of real human interactions. I didn’t guess the murderer. I enjoyed the village residents unique personalities and their loyalty to one another, especially Magdalene. Great narration also. I will try another book by Deborah Crombie.
