Publisher's summary

Winter, snow, murder—and a centuries-dead suspect.

In the chilly depths of a Yorkshire winter, a well-liked rector is found bludgeoned to death in her own church. With no sign of a murder weapon, local superstition quickly pins the blame on the ghost of a medieval monk believed to haunt the building...

Well accustomed to unusual murder investigations, DCI Jim Oldroyd takes on the case, along with his assistant, Sergeant Andy Carter, but they are hampered at every turn by the deepening snow and the threat of the supernatural. Even as possible motives and opportunities begin to reveal themselves, Oldroyd struggles to find a better suspect than the hooded phantom.

Has Oldroyd really found himself in the midst of a Gothic ghost story, or is there a very real killer at large? Spectre or otherwise, it soon becomes apparent that the murderer is not yet finished. And, for Oldroyd, it’s about to become personal...

okay

The book was generally okay. but I could have done without the preaching about misogyny and homophobia at the end. That's not what I was looking for in a book. not interested.

Totally Satisfying Read

I was drawn right into the mystery. It was good all the way through. I wanted to know the ending but didn’t want it to come to an end!

Great

I enjoyed it. Love the characters, and the away the story developed. It wasn’t who I thought

meh

I don’t read murder mystery fiction to learn about God. Neither am I interested in hearing the author banging on and on about people’s sexual preferences and whether or not they should be accepted by society. It’s not that these things aren’t important to me, it’s just that this is not the proper platform. This book is a Murder Mystery and would’ve been a wonderful murder mystery if not for the blathering about God and sexual preferences for hours. It almost feels as if the author is trying to prove to the world that he / she is not a homophobe. (Michael Page does an outstanding job as narrator!)

Excellent Read and Audible in all ways!

Bravo! I love everything about this book and the audible narration. From start to finish. The mystery and the social issues were wonderfully portrayed. I enjoy JR Ellis' Yorkshire mysteries. I've read every one and they are all very good. But, to me, this one is even better than the previous ones. I've said it before and will say it again, Please DONT STOP WRITING this series.

Love this series!

I found this author through my Kindle Unlimited and Audible subscriptions. I have listened to every book in this series and loved them all. I like the characters and enjoy that their lives are progressing throughout the series. It makes it almost feel like I am catching up with friends I have not seen for a while. The mysteries are satisfying and well thought out. I would recommend these to people who enjoy British mysteries and/or cozy mysteries.

First Ellis book I've read. Not great but eminently readable. Will definitely read another! I read a variety of books until I received my degree in English Literature but for the past 50 years or so all I've read mysteries, thrillers, some science fiction and Georgette H. books.

Ghosts and murderers in the old church!

The books in this series have a great twist where they are usually impossible murders that have ties to old legents, myths, books and maps. It gives them an old-fashioned, rural feel even though the stories are contemporary. Detective Oldroyd is the perfect inspector for the job since he has a love of old literature and Yorkshire history and loves to dig into the facts and solve puzzling mysteries. Murder in St. Anne's has ties to ghost story writer MR James with a supposed ghostly monk killing people in gruesome but impossible ways around the St. Anne's church. As usual with a British cozy mystery, there are lots of colorful characters, each with a potential motive for killing the others. The plot is people driven rather than evidence driven. At least the number of suspects is narrowed down when people start dying! The dark, cold and nasty winter weather sets a nice stage for a haunted, ancient church mystery and Oldroyd's relationship with his dedicated team of detectives and his eccentric boss add to the depth and authenticity of the story. I always get the audible version of his books because the narration by Michael Page is spot-on perfect. He does all the voices very well and you can tell who is speaking. I look forward to the book 7, although JR Ellis always makes us wait too long!

What could be better, a monk punished and murder!

Twists and turns as the detectives attempted to capture the culprit before they could kill again. Or could they even catch the perpetrator. A great audible book and the miles flew by as I listened as I drove.

Great plot with a surprise ending.

The story was well laid out. Great character development. I honestly did not see the ending until it was being spelled out. I appreciate stories that make you think. This was another great read by one of my favorite authors. Well worth the time spent listening to it.
