It was the most fashionable place to stay in London, until murder made a reservation. Solve the puzzle in this new mystery from USA Today bestselling author of the Glass and Steele series.

December 1899. After the death of her beloved grandmother, Cleopatra Fox moves into the luxury hotel owned by her estranged uncle in the hopes of putting hardship and loneliness behind her. But the poisoning of a guest throws her new life, and the hotel, into chaos.

Cleo quickly realizes no one can be trusted, not Scotland Yard and especially not the hotel’s charming assistant manager. With the New Year’s Eve ball approaching fast and the hotel’s reputation hanging by a thread, Cleo must find the killer before the ball, and the hotel itself, are ruined. But catching a murderer proves just as difficult as navigating the hotel’s hierarchy and the peculiarities of her family.

Can Cleo find the killer before the new century begins? Or will someone get away with murder?

Which provoked me more? I first heard Marian Hussey perform Monsters and Manners. I quickly fell in love with the narratrix and the series! Murder and the Mayfair was recommended to me on Audible and when I saw Marian's name I was sold. Next came the Lady, Cleo Fox. Her story was charming and elegant yet grimy and cheesy. Overall I adored the storyline and the characters. I kept thinking Cleo and Harry would end up together but the story (mostly) let out romance which ended in relief for this novel. Just a new girl trying to fit in while Curiosity drew her to solve a crime. Very entertaining indeed.

Hussey or a Lady?

This book was engaging without being too psychologically stressful. It fits a mood when you want a mystery but need something light. I enjoyed it.

The author leads you through a very realistic story. Yes the main character is quote-unquote rich but at only $4 a month how rich is that. she goes and lives with relatives in a hotel she is a poor relative of the owners she tries to find a niche for her self. Instead she finds a murder mystery, friends, and family. I would give you a hint for how the book ends but that would just ruin it. The're some twists and turns just like an old hotel staircase. Take the time to listen and you will be rewarded.

well I didn't see that coming

I loved the ensemble of characters and how they interacted in this upstairs downstairs cozy murder mystery. Cleo is perfectly placed to be the go between the two levels of society. The mystery was well done with perfectly timed red herrings and enough jumping to conclusions to entertain anyone. Cleo and Harry have great chemistry with just the right touch of sexual heat and antagonism to make you want to see what may develop between them. If you like a cozy murder mystery with engaging characters and well developed dialogue you will like this book. The narrator was most excellent.

Fun and fast-paced

If you're a fan of shows like "Murdoch Mysteries" then you'll enjoy this late- Victorian Era cozy murder mystery.
I read it through in a day & I've not done that in quite some time. The side characters are wonderfully written.

Enjoyable & cozy Victorian mystery

First of all, I love C. J. Archer, so most anything that comes from this iPad at this house is going to be pretty positive. How much do I love her books? I cozied up, got my favorite tea out, sat down and read all of the books in this series that are currently on Audible. I believe there are 12, and I was soooo happy to see that there is another one coming pretty soon. I love this character and the independence that she exudes on a daily basis. I love the play between the two lead characters and the path that is taking place between the two of them. The additional characters are so well written that I can see them in my mind’s eye so very easily. I love that these stories move so quickly and that I am going to want the next one sitting ready to open as soon as I have completed the one before it. I think the characters in the book are so real and so easy to relate to them even though we’re talking about a world that is 100+ years ago, but the problems and challenges women faced are still lurking in this world even though we are now in the 21st century. However, i am glad that most people in their right mind do consider that a woman does have a brain and can actually accomplish more than keep house and have babies. I have to keep each of these short because I am going to be writing all of these in one sitting. The story was a good one. It is easy to follow and it just shows that which we are faced with in our current lives. Lesson? Some things take an awful long time to change - if they ever do! Too bad we don’t have more people like our main characters who seem to be okay with a woman entering the workforce and being successful.Read it. This author just keeps on putting out such fantastic and easy to read books that are entertaining and that have a lot to say about things in today’s world - even if it is 100+ years later!
