About this listen
Can a serial killer be cured?
The second book in the Edmonton Police Station thriller series is a gruesome, dark, and twisted journey into a serial killer’s mind. The London streets are the hunting ground of a killer nicknamed "The Clock". At each crime scene the killer leaves his male victims dismembered in the shape of a clock face.
DCI Paul Webb, a detective recovering from a broken heart and stalking his ex-lover, is put in charge of the case. But he needs help to get inside the killer's mind. Along comes Dr Kirill Fedorov, a dying Russian man who believes he can stop disturbed children becoming serial killers.
Luke Wind is the only British child Dr Fedorov supposedly cured of becoming a serial killer; he’s persuaded by the Russian doctor to help the police track down "The Clock". But when the killings start to look personal, Luke starts to question whether he was cured of being a killer at all.

Story
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Story
On the day she returns to active duty with the Serial Crimes Unit, Detective Inspector Anjelica Henley is called to a crime scene. Dismembered body parts from two victims have been found by the river. The modus operandi bears a striking resemblance to Peter Olivier, the notorious Jigsaw Killer, who has spent the past two years behind bars. When he learns that someone is co-opting his grisly signature - the arrangement of victims’ limbs in puzzle-piece shapes - he decides to take matters into his own hands.

A Great Listen
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request, and have voluntarily left this review. Men are being murdered and their body parts are being turned in a clock face. The police force is struggling to get a lead on the murder when they contacted by a doctor that treated children with potential to be serial killers. His only success is Luke and he suggest that the police ask him for help. Soon events become even more disturbing. Lots of twists and turns to this fast paced tale keeps you listening to the very unexpected ending.

The plot of Spider Mouth was sinister and creepy, the plot of this book is downright terrifying! Thanks to Mark and his narrator (excellent Russian accent) I will never be able to relax on the streets of London again.

Mark Yarwood’s Second
Mark avoids whatever the audiobook equivalent of a “difficult second album” is by avoiding the tropes associated with it altogether, namely by not just giving us more of the same. A new team, a new dynamic and a very different, altogether more gruesome case to the first one. Better than Spider Mouth in every conceivable way. However there is a character in Murderson’s “Clock Killer” case that is far too suspicious, to the point that you write him off as being the killer very early on - this doesn’t take away from the suspense of finding out who the killer is though. Glad he kept the narrator from Spider Mouth and looking forward to hearing him again in Last Alive.

Goodbye Fairservice/Hello Webb
Though there are recurring characters in these books, one of the things I love about them is the revolving cast. For example Fairservice from the last one is now replaced by the altogether different (but no less compelling) Webb. I regard this as better than the previous book Spider Mouth, although its ending is perhaps not quite as memorable.

Very Good Narration
The first book dealt with a serial killer putting spiders in peoples mouths, the second one deals with a mad, dying Russian doctor who cured children of psychopathic tendencies and the blowback from one of his failed patients. So Mark always manages to keep his stories fresh and exciting. The guy who voices Mark Yarwoods books is a serious sounding dude with a smooth, deep and deadly voice.

A truly awful read!
I continued to read this book in the (vain) hope that it would get better. Instead, it got worse. The entire premise was interesting, if unbelievable, but the stilted narration robbed the story of necessary nuance, so even the interesting premise was ruined. The ending was forced and too fantastical for words. No more Omer!
