Publisher's summary
The fall and rise of a heavy metal icon.
Dave Mustaine is the first to admit that he's bottomed out a few times in his dark and twisted speed metal version of a Dickensian life.
Impoverished, transient childhood? Check.
Abusive, alcoholic parent? Check.
Mind-fucking religious weirdness (in his case the extremes of the Jehovah's Witnesses and Satanism)? Check.
Alcoholism, drug addiction, homelessness? Check, check, check.
Soul-crushing professional and artistic setbacks? Check.
Rehab? Check (seventeen times, give or take).
Near-death experience? Check that one, too.
James Hetfield, with whom many years ago Mustaine founded a band known as Metallica, once observed, with some incredulity, that Mustaine must have been born with a horseshoe up his ass. That's how lucky he's been, how fortunate he is to be pulling breath after so many close calls. And Hetfield is right. Mustaine has been lucky. He has been blessed. But here's the thing about having a horseshoe lodged in your rectum: It also hurts like hell. And you never forget it's there.
Mustaine has battled through it all to achieve dizzying heights. From the early, heady days of Metallica, being unceremoniously let go only to become a world-famous rock star - founder, front man, singer, songwriter, and guitarist (and de facto CEO) for Megadeth, one of the most popular bands in heavy metal - Mustaine's is a story that will inspire, stun, and terrify.

People ask me how come I'm still alive, and I don't know what to say. When I was growing up, if you'd have put me up against a wall with the other kids from my street and asked me which one of us was gonna make it to the age of 60, with five kids and four grandkids and houses in Buckinghamshire and California, I wouldn't have put money on me, no f--king way. But here I am: ready to tell my story, in my own words, for the first time. A lot of it ain't gonna be pretty. I've done some bad things in my time. But I ain't the devil.

As Iron Maiden's front man - first from 1981 to 1993 and then from 1999 to the present - Dickinson has been, and remains, a man of legend.

In LA only a few weeks and still living in his car, he answered a want ad for a bass player placed by someone who identified himself only as "Slash." Story
With over 70 million records sold, Black Sabbath, dubbed by Rolling Stone “the Beatles of heavy metal,” helped create the genre itself, with their distinctive heavy riffs, tuned down guitars, and apocalyptic lyrics. Bassist and primary lyricist Geezer Butler played a gigantic part in the band’s renown, from suggesting the band name to using his fascination with horror, religion, and the occult to compose the lyrics and build the foundation of heavy metal as we know it. In Into the Void, Butler tells his side of the story.

Elliott Smith was one of the most gifted songwriters of the 90s, adored by fans for his subtly melancholic words and melodies. The sadness had its sources in life. There was trauma from an early age, years of drug abuse, and a chronic sense of disconnection that sometimes seemed self-engineered. Smith died violently in LA in 2003, under what some believe to be questionable circumstances, of stab wounds to the chest. By this time fame had found him, and record-buyers who shared the listening experience felt he spoke directly to them from beyond: astute, damaged, lovelorn, fighting, until he could fight no more.

In 1992, Victor Bockris' celebrated biography was the first to recognize Richards' pivotal role in the legend of the Rolling Stones. Now that book on rock's most incredible survivor has been expanded. Here are the true facts behind Richards' battles with his demons: the women, the drugs and the love-hate relationship with Jagger. His struggle with heroin and his status as the rock star most likely to die in the 1970s. His scarcely believable rebirth as a family man in the 1980s. Illuminated with revealing quotes and thoughtful insights into the man behind the band that goes on forever.

Short and sporting waist-length dreadlocks, Morris is known the world over for his take-no-prisoners approach on the stage and his integrity off of it. Over the course of his 40-year career, he's battled diabetes, drug and alcohol addiction, and the record industry. My Damage is more than a book about the highs and lows of a punk rock legend, however.

Highway to hell, u turn, highway to heaven.
Being a huge megadeth fan for close to 15 years I wanted to read this book, but who am I kidding. I don't read....so once I saw this I jumped at it.
Quick overview but no spoilers.
This feels like Dave is just sitting there telling you his life story. It's very easy to listen to, if your a fan of megadeth then you'll have no problem listening to it.
He does go deep into what all he has tried, how it made him feel, as well as not pulling any punches. It does as well have a fair amount of cussing. So if that is a put off for you, then you might not want to listen to this.
And by the end he doesn't pull any punches about his faith in God/Jesus either. In making it clear that he's not a perfect guy, but the only way that he's still here is due to the fact God saved him.
As a Christian myself I loved hearing this story. In that aspect it felt like a huge testimony, more than a life story.

MAJOR LOVE FOR DAVE FROM JASON C. DANIEL & JESUS.
I loved this book. Dave Mustaine is a personal an professional hero of mine. I wish I could meet him an learn from him. I'm STILL A FAN. Th1rt3en is a great record an Three Title Track is a mantra to me. Super Collider an Dystopia are just as wonderful as all their albums.

Truth be Told
I started reading this book and as I read it, I had Dave Mustaine's distinctive voice in my head narrating. The book itself is fantastic, I was just disappointed that the audio book was narrated by somebody else. I know he is a busy man, but it didn't feel right.

inspiring and eye opening
I have always wondered what really happened to the destruction of Dave Mustaine and this book answered it all. I am glad the narrator sounds just like Dave, it was ad if Dave was speaking directly to you.
I had no idea how bad it was for Dave growing up and it further explains his behavior through the years. I really appreciate how open and honest he is about his life. I have truly come to admire him and his accomplishments.
This is definitely worth the money and the credit. I plan on listening to this again!!

good but could be better
love the book. I wish the author or at least someone with a rock and roll voice would have narrated it.

Yes, another drug crazed rock musician but...
Where does Mustaine rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Wow...this is so subjective. I lean heavily towards autobiographies and non-fiction in general. Best judge is how anxious I was to keep listening...very. You have to be fan of Megadeth and know some history to truly appreciate the life of Mustaine
Any additional comments?
Dave Mustaine is very intelligent person and one of the most tortured public people you'll ever read about...yet, he somehow is still roaming the earth and keeping perspective. So many musicians broke down completely, well before accomplishing everything that Mustaine has - bravo Dave. Unlike many other addicts, it seems he did himself the most damage along the way - yet kept his vision alive.
