About this listen

A deeply honest investigation of what it means to be a woman and a commodity from Emily Ratajkowski, the archetypal, multi-hyphenate celebrity of our time.

Emily Ratajkowski is an acclaimed model and actress, an engaged political progressive, a formidable entrepreneur, a global social media phenomenon, and now, a writer. Rocketing to world fame at age 21, Ratajkowski sparked both praise and furor with the provocative display of her body as an unapologetic statement of feminist empowerment. The subsequent evolution in her thinking about our culture’s commodification of women is the subject of this book.

My Body is a profoundly personal exploration of feminism, sexuality, and power, of men's treatment of women and women's rationalizations for accepting that treatment. These essays chronicle moments from Ratajkowski’s life while investigating the culture’s fetishization of girls and female beauty, its obsession with and contempt for women’s sexuality, the perverse dynamics of the fashion and film industries, and the grey area between consent and abuse.

Nuanced, unflinching, and incisive, My Body marks the debut of a fierce writer brimming with courage and intelligence.

I'm a 56 yo mother of a 25 yo daughter and I just texted her that she and her friends need to get this book IMMEDIATELY!!! Emrata (her insta name) is such an incredibly complex, insightful, deep and brilliant storyteller! I could SO relate to this book and it helped me reframe a lot of situations that have occurred in my life for which I have felt shame and regret. I love autobiographies and have read everything from Madeleine Albright to Keith Richards but this is by far the most well written, compelling, important, and relatable autobiography I've ever read!! I can't understand the critics of this book - its magnificent and honestly I think will be one of the most important feminist/human biographies of this era!!! Thank you for truly changing my life!!!

A very honest, vulnerable, humble account of a lengthy series of events that lead this woman to where she is today, in her own words. Emily raised questions in this body of work about an industry and arguably world that has objectified women since it’s existence, yet why should anyone have to deal with sexual harassment or being treated as an object at any stage of life - regardless of your profession or how you identify? The author documents and details many of the ways she seeks to exercise agency and influence over her life in effort to experience a level of power and security that she yearns for whilst working in an environment where her livelihood largely depends on her being what other people want her to be. There are references that could be triggering to some people with a past of mental health issues, as topics bordering on sexual assault, depression, suicidal thoughts, disordered eating. It’s nice to hear Emily talk about many challenging aspects of her life, and in doing so with bold humility becomes incredibly relatable to us all. The author seeks to find humanity within herself and others while capitalizing off of what she considers to be her greatest assets in “My Body.” Thought provoking for mind, body, and spirit. Congratulations, Emily and God Bless.

Wow, I’m tears as I finish listening. I can honestly say that this is the best listening experience that I have ever had and I still would like to get the paper back to have a physical copy. I adored hearing her voice narrating especially in the vulnerable moments. Thank you Emily, for sharing your story. It feels like a gift to see myself in them and remember the gift of being in this body.

Emily Ratajkowski is much much more than a beautiful woman. Her writing is raw and gripping. The story is not at all a “poor me, I’m so beautiful”. She’s tough and smart and confident and also used and naive and dismissed because of her beauty. She narrates the books beautifully - her tone and emotion are just right. She’s so vulnerable in this book. It’s really really good.
