About this listen

Friendship takes center stage in New York Times best-selling author Nancy Thayer’s captivating, emotionally charged novel featuring all the tenderness and wit, drama and romance, that listeners have come to expect from this insightful, much-loved writer.

When they meet as girls on a beach in Nantucket, Maggie McIntyre and Emily Porter become fast friends - though Emily’s well-heeled mother would prefer that she associate with the upscale daughters of bankers and statesmen rather than the child of a local seamstress. But the two lively, imaginative girls nevertheless spend many golden summers together building castles in the sand, creating magical worlds of their own, and forging grand plans for their future.

Even as Emily falls for Maggie’s brother, Ben, and the young women’s paths diverge, the duo remain close friends. Then the unthinkable happens: a lifelong friendship is pushed to its breaking point with the appearance of the handsome, charismatic, charming, and incredibly sexy Wall Street trader Cameron Chadwick - upending both of their lives.

Struggling with the difficult choices they have made and the secrets they have kept, Maggie and Emily find the road to love and fulfillment is full of bumps and twists, as well as entirely unexpected and quite wonderful turns of the heart. They also learn that while true love may be rare, a true friendship is rarer still.

Decent story

Any additional comments?

Not a page turner, but I kept listening to find out what happened with the girls. Several sex scenes and explicit language so not appropriate to listen in the car with kids.

Disappointing ending - contains spoiler

I wanted Ben to find someone else. Emily was so selfish! I was so very happy for Maggie and Tyler. Loved the book and will read more by this author.

Light but good summer Beach read!

What made the experience of listening to Nantucket Sisters the most enjoyable?

The bond between Maggie, Emily and Ben throughout their early years to later years.

What did you like best about this story?

It happened on Nantucket Island which always brings a story with the Island environment. I liked the love between the rich Emily and the Islanders. There is an interesting contrast from those who live on the Island year round and the "summer people". I also like the Mother's (Frances) character. Solid foundation of a working Islander not rich yet rich in what was important~family. She spoke with a soft loving voice.

What does Kate Rudd bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Kate Rudd always puts one into the book and it's adventure. She makes life a getaway during the book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, it was a bit light for me. I prefer more happening in a storyline. It didn't have enough to gear me to keep reading; though it was a good summer read.

Any additional comments?

This was my first Nancy Thayer book; I will read more but I hope for more substance.

Good read

Light hearted and cute. Easygoing and no violence. Nice but Emily did sound a little selfish

Sappy, light romance novel

The description of this book sounded intriguing, but the story wasn't intriguing at all. It's about two women who meet as girls on Nantucket Island, and then the story continues through their lives. There's no depth whatsoever. The dialogue is not at all believable as the terms used went out in the early 1990's. It's sappy and dull. Not my type of book.

A predictable Tale that doesn't develop much

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No. I bought this one because I used to live on Nantucket and wanted to hear local color, etc. I had read some of Ms. Thayer's earlier books. This one was so cliche-riddent and predictable. I felt as if it could be a young adult book. There was almost no plot twists or originality in the development.

Has Nantucket Sisters turned you off from other books in this genre?

I will not read any more. There are very few american women authors I find as rewarding as the British writers. I could name them for you, but anyone who reads my reviews knows who they are and what I like.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Kate Rudd?

This reader was very annoying. Her male voices, in particular, were alienating. Yet again, the male characters were so stereotypical and underdeveloped, she didn't have much to work with, did she?

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No.

Any additional comments?

A sadly disappointing book. I skipped about 1/4 after the half because it was already too obvious how it would end. And end as I predicted it did. Sad that the females were so darn stereotypical. The most interesting character in the book, Frances, was not given enough space. Also, almost nothing about Emily's parents.
A letdown on most fronts, even the descriptive prose.

Ugh this narrator!

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Honestly I enjoy the light summer reading pleasure of all of Nancy theaters booksbut I could not get past this narrator. I tried three times to listen to this book and had to put it down every time because she was so obnoxious. It is choppy, over enunciated and so oddly paced - I even tried speeding up the narration to 1.5x to get me through a tedious painting project in my house and gave up.

What could Nancy Thayer have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I couldn't get past the narrator to even appreciate the story, though I will say I enjoyed the characters enough to make it through more than I wanted to.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Kate Rudd?

Anyone.

Any additional comments?

I Ana the retry low maintenance audibke listener, And have listened to all of Nancy Thayer's previous books and enjoyed them. I was disappointed in this one and simply couldn't get past Kate Russ's style and in 4 years of 3 book a month membership I figured out how to write a review simply to try to help others to have a heads up on how terrible this narrator' style is.

I had such high hopes

This story had so much potential. But I couldn’t get past the terrible voice and the ending was not only predictable but awful. Very disappointing. I also can’t listen to that voice ever again. It grated on my nerves. Sorry……

Zero stars

This was chosen for a book club and I can say with full certainty it was the worst book I’ve ever read. Story and performance were atrocious. I love a good beach read but this was just awful.
