About this listen

The last thing Ella Sinclair needed on her birthday was a cheating boyfriend, a broken heart, and a dead car battery in a remote beach town. At her greatest moment of need, the protective and sexy Porter Masters comes to her rescue. Ella takes a holiday week at the coast to discover herself and finds that her attraction to Porter is potent and undeniable. Uncertain of their future together, Ella struggles to open her heart to trust again. Porter Masters takes care of his own: his single mother, his company, and now he's compelled to protect the beauty that walked into his world. Never one for relationships in his past, Porter discovers that he was waiting all along for Ella. As their time together comes to an end, will Porter fight for the woman who stole his heart, despite the obstacles? Contains mature themes.

On the whole I really enjoyed this book but the ending really put me off.
Ella finds her boyfriend of four years cheating on her, she panics and runs. Ella and Kyle were due to spend a week rekindling their relationship at a cottage on the beach so this is where she heads. Sobbing and distraught she pulls into the local bar where she meets Porter Masters and suddenly Kyle's betrayal doesn't seem quite as earth shattering as it did moments ago.
This book was a nice interesting read and I just love Porter, I liked Ella but she did have a couple of stupid moments. Although enjoyable it wasn't without its faults and if I'm being totally honest I didn't like the way it ended, not just the fact that it ended but I didn't like the way it did so I personally won't be reading the next one which is a shame since until then it had been good.

Romy Nordlinger was OK but not great with the delivery of the story.

A DREAMY LOVE STORY.... UNTIL THE CLIFFHANGER

This is one sugary sweet, romantic and sigh-worthy listen and, as Ella and Porter's love story unfolded, I was drawn into their passion, desires, tender love scenes and the painful dilemma that these two loveable characters faced.

But what I wasn't prepared for was the shocking events that this author had lying waiting for the happy unsuspecting listener in the last few chapters which were dramatic, raw, heart wrenching and all my WTF's, OMG's and tears couldn't take away the heartache of this torturous CLIFFHANGER ending. I only hope Audible can follow up with book two very very very very quickly.

Worth a credit? Loveable H/H and secondary characters, some angst, sex, drama, a bitter ex and, of course the cliffhanger, makes this a very creditworthy listen. But if you're not a fan of the fast 'instant love' plot or one that's filled with sweet sentiments, tender gestures and a very romantic story then maybe pass on this one.

New author for me - tried because I LOVE narrator

Would you listen to Never Close Enough again? Why?

Yes . . . enjoyed this new author and the story. Found (and purchased) because it's narrated by one of my favorite narrators: Romy Nordlinger!! Keep having Romy narrate your books - please!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Porter . . .

Have you listened to any of Romy Nordlinger’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Not yet, but have already purchased books 2 and 3 in this series . . . and hope there are more to follow.

Any additional comments?

Great job, Anie!!

I didn't want it to end!

This book never let me go from the second it started! An awesome story of real passion with an incredible ending. An emotional roller coaster. The narrator was really on it, very sensitive and you get the feeling she was moved by it too. Absolutely worth a credit, if you can handle how you’ll feel afterwards, when you want more!

This is a beautiful story but sad at the end. Porter is a very good man and his love will conquer anything. sniff sniff

Narration Ruined It for Me

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Since I didn't finish listening, my review is based solely on the narration. I would definitely say it was a waste of my time to listen to this book. The narration is bad, really bad. It reminded me of a comedian doing a skit, narrator made the characters sound young and immature. I finally decided to stop listening and read the book, it's a good story and deserves a chance.

What other book might you compare Never Close Enough to and why?

Not sure since I didn't finish.

How could the performance have been better?

By selecting a different narrator. Romy Nordlinger would be better off narrating books by Amy Sedaris or maybe a Gilda Radner memoir. IMO, her voice doesn't suit the romance genre.

Did Never Close Enough inspire you to do anything?

Stop listening and actually read the book.

Any additional comments?

This review should in no way deter you from buying and reading the actual book. It's a shame when a good book is ruined by bad narration.

I am pissed off!

I am really pissed off. I can not believe that Anie Michaels ended this book this way. It is one long tease. You don't know until the last chapter that you'll have to buy the next book to hear what happens!

But, to comment on what IS in this book...I was aware (and pleased) at the beginning that the author did not use rough language. She avoided the use of terms like c@*k and d#+k. She did not use the word f#@k -- as a noun or as a verb -- and the characters did not curse.

Then, three quarters of the way into the book the language gets course and the sex gets explicit. It was just odd. Did the book have two authors? Was it written in two different decades?

The narration was okay but not enthralling. There was something naive about the reading. Romy Nordlinger did not change the pace or inflection of her voice to build the anticipation or excitement in the sex scenes.

But mainly I am pissed about the "cliff hanger" ending. That was just mean. To me and to Porter.

Slow and not exciting.

It was mostly all about the sex these two people have, then a disappointing ending. I would not recommend.

Pretty good

I love Anie Michaels, this one is good and I’m going to listen to the next. Wasn’t crazy about the ending. I liked the narrator.
