About this listen

"Jessica Hawkins weaves a tale of forbidden love in epic proportion." (Corinne Michaels, New York Times best-selling author)

It was a hot summer day when I met him on the construction site next to my parents' house. Under the sweat and dirt, Manning Sutter was as handsome as the sun was bright. He was older, darker, experienced. I wore a smiley-face t-shirt and had never even been kissed. Yet, we saw something in each other that would link us in ways that couldn't be broken...no matter how hard we tried.

I loved Manning before I knew the meaning of the word. I was too young, he said. I would wait. Through all the carefully-chosen words hiding what we knew to be true, his struggle to keep me innocent, and infinitely starry nights - I would wait. But I'd learn that no matter what you achieve in life, it means nothing if you suffer the heartbreak that comes with falling for someone you can never have. Because even though I saw Manning first, that didn't matter. My older sister saw him next.

Book one in the completed Something in the Way series, a USA Today best-selling love saga.

Would you listen to Something in the Way again? Why?

I would definitely listen to it again. Once the story grabs you, it doesn't let you go.The more you listen, the more you need to know about what's going to happen with Manning and Lake.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Something in the Way?

The final chapter. Hands down. You don't really see it coming and I love that because I can usually call how a book is going to end within the first few chapters. With this one, I never saw the end coming.

What about Andi Arndt and Zachary Webber ’s performance did you like?

They were wonderful choices for voicing Manning and Lake. They helped bring the story to life.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

YES! And I almost did. Had I had the time, I would have.

Any additional comments?

LISTEN TO THIS BOOK! You'll want the ebook and paper back too, it's THAT good.

Oh. My. Goodness.

I have had this audiobook sitting on my library for a few years. I decided to finally give it a go. When I first started this, I was not loving it. Lake was so immature for her age. She acted less younger than 16 years old and was very oblivious to everyday life. However; I am so glad I pushed through those first moments, as I ended up flying through this in one sitting. I ended up really loving the story between Lake and Manning. Be mindful this is an age gap romance that does involving a 16 year old and a 23 year old. This did take a turn towards the end that I was not expecting. It kind of came out of nowhere and made the whole story have a different tone. It is not what you would think either. This ends with a cliff hanger and I need to jump into book two ASAP.

Age Gap

The story was interesting but I was really bothered by the age gap. The author clearly thinks it’s okay or normal for a man to lust after a teenager. I would forget sometimes and then lose myself in their romance but then I would remember that she’s a kid and then it made me sick.

Just okay

Since having so many siblings I wasn’t naive of what boys thought about. At 16 I flirted, I had confidence and I knew right from wrong (and what my parents thought was wrong). This situation between the three people is drama filled. At certain parts I had to stop listening bc I was frustrated. At 23, I was out of college and had my priorities. Manning really frustrated me, he could have made the situation easier if Lake never hid. Sometimes girls need a male figure to talk things through bc they have different perspectives- since her father really didn’t care for her opinion he was the likely candidate. With the cliffhanger I must listen to the next book to find the conclusion

Oh to be 16

This story had me hooked. At first, I thought it was going to be a little too much older guy falls for younger girl, but Jessica Hawkins wrote this in such a good way you could understand how it could have happened and it wasn't creepy or dirty just true love. My heart broke for Lake because she loved Manning so much but because of her age he had to push her away and hide his feelings, but to stay close to her he dated her sister. Tiffany, I was so angry at her for what she did though, so many times I wanted to jump into the story and slap her silly. Manning, what can I say about Manning. A broken man who found light in his life but couldn't keep it. This book made me laugh and it made me cry a must listen. I listened to this book at least three times over. Andi Arndt and Zachary Webber are brilliant they brought the characters to life for me, two of my favorite narrators. Love Lake and Manning.....

Tears just tears!!!

I bought this on sale because I love the narrators - but what an irritating, far-fetched, long, drawn-out, story that also leaves you hanging in the wind!

The sisterly bickering was insane & went on forever, the parents are portrayed as morons, & Lake’s thoughts & actions are those of a 12, not 16 year old girl. She was painted as an immature child, rather than a budding young lady. Tiffany appears to be used as a pawn. Manning is a hot, good guy, but never finds satisfaction or success.

The story has interesting parts, & I appreciate the slow burn of desire between Lake & Manning, but this book just ended stupidly - or rather didn’t end; the author just dropped the mic.

Irritating on So Many Levels

I started to listen to the three book series on a Friday and by Sunday morning about 3 am, I finished it. I literally could not stop listening. This has been one of the most intense series that I have ever read/listened to this year. I still can't get this story out of my head.

I am generally not a fan of a "Lolita" type of books, but fortunately that is not what this book is. It is still a forbidden love story about a 23 year old young man who becomes captivated by a very sheltered 16 year old girl. Clearly not wanting to hurt her, he resists his true feeling and tries to stay away. "Try" is key word because the forbidden develops because he can't stay away from Lake, who is only 16. So he is sucked into Lake's beautiful and sexualy experienced 19 year sister, who is considered the black sheep in the family. Even though, Tiffany realizes that Lake has her first crush on Manning, Tiffany purposely pursues him in order to "one up" Lake. Lake is the sole focus of their dad's attention because Lake is destined to follow their dad's dream for her to go to USC. Tiffany knows that by dating Manning, she will piss their dad off because Manning appears to be somewhat of a dead-beat that comes from a troubled background. So when Tiffany proclaims that she is dating Manning, the girls troubled relationship only gets more complicated because Tiffany closes her eyes to the relationship that is building between her sister and Manning.

This first book is intense, and beautifully written. You will feel for all the characters involved. It is a bit slow at times because it is setting up the other 3 books that will follow. It starts in the 90's but is a story that takes years to unfold. I would not say this book is your traditional love story type of book. That will follow in the books 2, 3 and 4. There is no sex in book 1. There are only a few kisses, but lots of intense moments leading up to ....... in the upcoming books. As an extra bonus, the audio has two of the best narrators in the industry. Zachary Webber who is amazing at showing the depth of pain and emotion that Manning goes through over the years. Andi Arndt who is also amazing at changing her voice from an 16 year old to a mature woman as the series progresses. This is a 5 star book. Worth every penny if you are ready for a deep emotional book and forbidden love story.

Please note: there is no underage sex in this book.
