About this listen

All across Scotland, the resistance movement is growing in both strength and numbers. For the first time in five generations, the Mages are afraid—and it's all because of one woman.

But Mairi knows where the real power lies and that it is the Mages who maintain control of the country. She has become the poster girl for the resistance and her magic is growing stronger by the day. That doesn't mean, however, that she has any real chance of succeeding against the might of the Mages.

And yet strange things are afoot. Crude runes are appearing all over the country while the Afflicted seem to be changing—and not for the better. The very soul of Scotland may soon be up for grabs.

If ever there is a time for a true hero to step forward, this is it.

Another winner from Helen Harper!

I read the first book, Hummingbird, and it took several chapters to really get engaged. By the end of the first book, I was ready to dive right into this one. I was not disappointed! It's a great story with a strong lead, camaraderie amongst her band of outcasts, people who put the greater good over their own self interest, really nasty bad guys, and a nice love story. The narrator did a great job, as usual.

Loving the series

The series continues with the uprising. Good fight scenes and character development. Despite a few cliches I’m still excited to see how the series ends.

wanting the best of the author

I really like Helen Harper, she has a wonderful skill for creating new worlds but for some reason this series isn’t hitting the sweet spot with me. The demon characters are portrayed as helpless which goes against the grain since supposedly they are terrifying to the populace? And there is too little character development in this story, hard to identify with their reactions and with the heroines’ thought processes, decisions and feelings.

Just booo

This one was a disappointment. The writing just wasn't as smart as her other novels. I enjoy this author, but it was a struggle to finish this one. Nightingale felt like a placeholder.
