About this listen

It happened one night not long after that holiday. I think they had been out, but I’m not sure. I remember I was sleeping in my bed when the noises of my mum and him getting home woke me. Suddenly, my bedroom door opened, but it wasn’t my mum. I didn’t know where she was. It was him. I pretended to be asleep. He came to the side of the bed, and I didn’t know what was happening, but my mind told me to stay still. He pulled the covers back; I didn’t move. I kept my eyes closed. My heart felt like it was jumping out of my chest. He lifted my legs apart, and I let them move. He pulled up my nightdress and pulled my pants down. I didn’t even try to open my eyes.

Imagine being an innocent seven-year-old girl with a broke, single mum. Now imagine your mum meets a man who can give her a nice house and a better life in exchange for you. That’s what happened to me. For years, I suffered neglect and psychological and sexual abuse from him, with my mum being a silent witness. When I was finally able to get rid of him and escape, I didn’t know that my life was only going to get worse. After a battle against addiction, depression and suicidal thoughts that lasted for years, and with the help of therapy, I started to slowly recover and get my life back. Although my healing journey has just started and there’s still a long way to go, I can say I’m alive. I had No One to Save Me, yet I survived.

Writer and reader both great at keeping your focus. My only issue was that it was hard to follow at times how much time had gone by or the age of the author during specific incidents. Other than that, awful story but good book!

I thought that this book was a mirror of life: there are painful, traumatic events in your life that you can't control, and it affects your life and your relationships in more ways than you wish as an adult. I'm really glad the author wrote this book. Too many of us have been affected by childhood sexual trauma, and bringing it to light helps realize we are not alone, and our stories of hurt are more similar than we know. Her story of finding love in her son and eventually her mum were pretty realistic; nothing is perfect, but the love you find is the most important treasure you can have. I love the narrator. Her accent is great. She turned a story that could be painful to listen to into something rather entertaining.

Sad, but redemptive story. True to life.

This is a story about what a lot of people go thru. Who can't say anything to anyone. I am so glad that she became a strong woman and is doing a lot better. Keep fighting and stay strong.

The sound quality is extremely good, and if you like to find some books that narrated with an Irish accent like Jackseptieye.
The author took a lot of courage to organize her memories from her childhood and transition of her present life as mother while she was writing this book.

Like every child, we have a different upbringing and house rules. Unfortunately, we cannot make our choices when we were children. Parents took an impact to our lives that will haunt us and we somewhat need to learn how to release the story we all have suffered or enjoyed at our some period of lives.

Whether or not, this is an opportunity to read or listen a book in the contemporary that we can relate at some point. Or learn how others might be and that sometimes we need to learn how to be kind to ourselves and others. Do not need to take personal on what had happened, as we might build up some fear, anger and disappointment.

I would highly recommend to take this for light reading and mutual understanding, and be prepared how the author will show her story to you. At the end, we all need to learn how to create our own story and practice gratitude.

A real survival anecdote with an Irish narrator

As a 30 year old woman who was raped, abused and had their virginity taking from me by the age of 10 from someone close to me in my home, this story made a big impact on me. It really helped me find some closure with my abuser and within myself. It's very sad but also comforting to hear that someone else felt/thought the same way during the moments I was being raped. I have always been ashamed of myself because of my thoughts in that moment and it made me realize nothing was wrong with me but that this was a common reaction. This impacted me the most. Highly recommend. Also she does a great job narrating.

This was a very interesting story throughout the entire book. The narration was excellent.

As a reader, I thank the author and editor for refraining from adding unnecessary filler in the belief that page count makes a book more valuable. A solid 5 star book.

Good throughout. No unnecessary filler.

I have to say Wow, it takes a very brave woman to tell this story. The story is well written and narrated. This story had me intrigued from the beginning. I applaud this author for having a strong will to tell her story. This story had me reliving my on emotions through me childhood. I prays you for being so strong and wish I had the same bravery.
This story is about betrayal, rape, and a pedophile and over coming the trauma of a Horrendous childhood.
The narrator does a fabulous job with the character . She also has a lovely Irish accent which adds to the telling. This retelling of the story takes place in Ireland.

Brave story!
