About this listen

Kathleen Turner has goals. She moved to Indianapolis to start seeing to them, but things aren’t going quite as well as she’d hoped. She’s a runner for a high-powered law firm in town, not the most prestigious of positions, but it and her part-time bartender gig at least pays the bills. And one of the senior partners is a dreamboat in that obscenely rich, disturbingly good looking, slightly snobbish sort of way.

It’s the middle of the night when Kathleen hears fighting coming from her neighbor Sheila’s apartment. As disturbing as that is, it’s the ominous sound of silence afterwards that keeps Kathleen from falling back to sleep. Slipping from bed with the intention of making sure everything is okay, Kathleen knocks on her friend’s door, only to find Sheila murdered, her naked body sprawled on sheets stained crimson with her blood.

Shock and horror are followed by gritty determination when it becomes clear that Sheila’s death isn’t random and it isn’t the result of a jealous boyfriend. It’s the opening gambit in a web of murder, deceit, conspiracy, and fraud that stretches to the law firm for which Kathleen works. Maybe to the very office that Blane Kirk commands.

And Kathleen Turner, law office runner, can trust no one if she wants to survive.

The up talk on the end of each sentence is annoying. The narrator seemed to be yelling instead of talking.

Good story, no so good narration.

Although a bit elementary, it was sexy, fun and I downloaded the audio version so I listened while commuting and the reader had a perfect voice for the lovely Kat.

Fun and exciting

OMG the narration is awful. She drags out one syllable words into two or three. Totally ruins it.

Is the narrator related to Julia Child?

Her inflection makes me crazy. She ends ever sentence and comment on an upward note! I ended up cringing at the narrator instead of listening at the story! I did like the story and found it interesting.

I just don't like the narrator

Ok, this book and series was a guilty pleasure!
Still, some moments or comments were worthy of a few or many eye-rolls, and by the end of the series I was really tired of the author using violence (subjected at heroine) at every turn, with no other written consequence save for a man's rage at failing to protect (even when not in same city) and seeking to give a little TLC which was almost never graciously accepted. And come on! Whatever she gets done to her she takes 2 aspirins and sleeps it off? WTF? At one point in the series she gets run over by a car! Also, the heroine is kinda stupid at times.
And her man is supposed to be a high-ranking political magnate, but is able to start a shoot-out in the middle of the street, using concealed weapons and no one notices? Really? Shouldn't he be busy doing political stuff somewhere? Didn't know governors or senators had so much time on their hands or so much privacy...
Still... even with all the bad, I have to admit the series was addicting. I dunno why I kept going back to it and even read the whole series in a week, loving the last book the best. Yes, even with the eye-roll causing momentary stupidity or tantrums, and too over-bearing (sometimes stupid too) men.
Won't spoil it for you and tell you whom she ends up with...

Addictive!

Good story. So so narration.

I did like the story. But, the narrator sounded as if she was either angry or bored, unless she was actually doing a character voice. Therefore, it was difficult to listen to at times.

Good story. So so narration.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

As a book to read, yes. As a book on tape, no. The story is fine, but not the narration.

What didn’t you like about Angela Dawe’s performance?

Her inflection was irritating, for instance, she would emphasize the wrong word in a sentence. Also, if I set the volume for the main character's voice, I could not hear the other characters' voices. I was constantly having to change the volume depending on which character was speaking. Since I listen to my books as I travel, it was irritating.

Do you think No Turning Back needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Would probably read a follow-up.

Grating voice
