Publisher's summary

Robert wants to be a star in the movies. He has invented a system with his computer that could put the old stars back on the screen, alongside him. He has the script and the money, but Hollywood isn't keen. Could the perfect partnership lie with Ernest Fudgepacker of Fudgepacker's Emporium?

Mostly Hapless

Unfortunately, the story can’t sustain the promise of a great title. There are a few moments of mild humor, but it is otherwise uninspired.

Modern Day Comedy

love it when people courage to have a sense of humor in a time where people can't take a joke and stay offended. Not only is this book hilarious its very well written and edgy. I recommend this book hands down to anyone who likes a bit of satire with a side of dark comedy.

Give it time

it starts out very weird, but keep listening. It turns around and all makes sense in the end

Very entertaining

Me, not being Brittish had a little trouble with the narration. I found the story overall, very entertaining. I liked the side stories that melded into the main story and some of the twists I didn't see coming.

Great Robert Rankin story!

Time travelking Nazis making movies is the least weird thing in this stiry, a sort of Brentford trilogy type tale. i do feel the forays into body horror and crerpyness threw me off but they did tie into the story, sort of. Still enoyable though i expected more gags.

British insanity

Over all it was good...though some good f the backtracking for time travel dragged on a bit longer than I like.

Very odd and very funny

It is one of those stories that doesn't quite make sense until the end when all the bits fall in to place. I guessed some of the surprises but no where near all of them and there were many. After it is over you need to give it one last think through just to make sure you got it all. I loved it.

A Bit Droll but No Laughs

A phantom pub with a part time barman that may or not exist. A movie that hypnotizes the masses. A flying saucer time machine that takes Hitler and his top henchmen from the past to the future. Surgery that removes your spine and allows you to live forever. Tech that allows you to interact with holograms of dead movie stars.

Robert Rankin tries to wring comedy out of this strange brew, this kitchen sink plot, channeling the English sense of humor that is best represented (at least for us Americans) by Monty Python and Douglas Adams. Alas, after 45 years and more than 45 titles, there is a reason Rankin is not on the same list as those comic luminaries: he's just not that funny.

For me, anyway. He obviously has many admirers who have placed his works on funniest books lists, which made me want to sample him (that and some of his titles becoming available in the plus catalog). I found him droll at the start, but as the plot gets thicker and sillier, and his commitment to it grows stronger, the laughs just evaporate.

He is however an excellent narrator, sounding very much like Michael Palin -- although if he can't get laughs out of his own jokes, who can?

Gotta love, TIME TRAVELING NAZI'S!

I have recently discovered Mr. Rankin's books and I am enthralled by the world of silliness I have discovered. Thank you Mr. Rankin!!!

Scifi with humor.

All the excitement and unlikeliest with none of the pomposity and pointless seriousness of the usual scifi writers.
