About this listen

A full-length standalone romantic comedy from USA TODAY best-selling author R.S. Grey.

"Oh my god. Who is that?"

I get asked this question a lot.

"Oh him?" I reply. "That's just Ian."

Just Ian is the biggest understatement of the century. Just the Mona Lisa. Just the Taj Mahal. Just Ian, with his boring ol' washboard abs and dime-a-dozen dimpled smile.

Just Ian is...just my best friend.

We're extremely close, stuck so deep inside a Jim-and-Pam-style friendzone everyone at work assumes we're a couple - that is until one day, word spreads through the teacher's lounge that he's single. Fair game. Suddenly, it's open season on Ian.

He should be reveling in all the newfound attention, but to our mutual surprise, the only attention he seems to want is mine.

He's turning our formerly innocent nightly chats into X-rated phone calls. Our playful banter sports a new, dangerous edge.

I want to assume he's playing a prank on me, just pushing my buttons like always - but when Ian lifts me onto the desk in my classroom and slides his hands up my skirt, he doesn't leave a lot of room for confusion.

I'm a little scared of things going south, of losing my best friend because I can't keep my hands to myself. So, I'm just going to back away and not return this earth-shattering kiss - oh who am I kidding?!

Goodbye Ian, ol' buddy, ol' pal!

Helloooo mister not so nice guy.

Perfect!!

Loved her characters. It felt like watching those two friends that you always knew were going to get together finally figure it out.

Amazing

Dawson’s creek for adults. The couple is hilarious and so much fun. The “scenes” sizzle

Cute love story

A great go-to if you're looking for a nice love story.

I had some issues with it, the greatest of which is this: if either Sam or Ian had just said "I have been in love with you for 3 years, we should be together" this story never would have happened. Like, I get it, people have anxiety about their emotions, but instead of just telling Sam how he felt, Ian had to go through this weird seduction game. Instead of telling Ian how she felt, Sam just had a weird melt down.

Communication is so often lacking in romance novels. I don't know why I'm surprised.

Pretty good and funny

Narration was well done. Simple romantic comedy, contemporary, no unnecessary drama, fun, HEA, satisfying epilogue. Light read, worth a credit, I think.

mmmm

5-12-20
Rating changed - tried to listen to again but ended up skipping much. A little way in I remembered how it irritated me that two ppl so clearly in love would wait so long to do anything about it. His parts do make me smile a lot though, that's why it stays a 4. h is hard to endure.

So first off - the friends to lovers thing is great
next he's a good hero
most importantly it made me laugh here and there
she's whiny and complainy
really
pretty irritating that she straight up tells him REPEATEDLY that she wants sex and he says no and walks away
as to the narration
it would be nice if 75% wasn't from the girls view
balance is good

Enjoyed the humor

Samantha and Ian, I really enjoyed their story. They have a lot of humor in their banter. They had an ease in their comical discussions. And when Samantha panics, that's when things get even funnier.

They are best friends, and everyone assumes these teachers are dating. But they aren't. Then she let's everyone know inadvertently, and all the single teachers pounce on a chance for a date. Ian is not about to let anyone date Samantha until he gets his real shot. Samantha doesn't want to lose their friendship. So their fix to this is obvious... and I won't spoil it.

Narrators did an excellent job. Luci Christian Bell is a newer narrator for me and I enjoyed her. Teddy Hamilton is a favorite and he didn't disappoint.

Cute and Funny

I love books that can make me laugh. Not all Rom Coms are funny but this really was.

lacking in originality

This novel started out well. The beginning is funny and relatable. But the plot unfolds somewhat incoherently. The "secret" desire of each protagonist for the other turns out to be not a secret at all and is replaced by a weird neurosis ascribed to the strangely infantilized female character. Her persistent "nervousness" is unconvincing since for most of the novel she is the more sexually aggressive of the two. The cast of colleagues at the highschool are just straight up stereotypes. The female protagonist, Sam, is supposed to have multiple suitors desiring her attention, but that storyline is quickly abandoned and instead the focus is on a weird "hot for teacher" student crush that registers as gross rather than titillating. Her strange family is an underdeveloped plotline that again just doesn't add much, as is the strange persecution at the hands of the PTA president. The rush wedding at the museum has the potential to be funny, but it is such a rushed mess that it just seems out of place.
This book is narrated alternately from both protagonists' perspectives, but her voice dominates, especially as the plot wears on. It's too bed, because the contrasting perspectives are actually an aspect that has potential, and his perspective is far more realistic, and sexier than hers.
