About this listen

A rare conduit of Light drawn to the Shadows. A spymaster who can't seem to stay away.

For as long as she can remember, Arken Asher has been searching for answers—driven by an insatiable hunger, a need to understand the meaning behind her dangerous arcane secrets. She's finally taken that leap into the unknown, leaving her simple life behind to attend the Arcane Studium, a prestigious college of magickal arts & sciences nestled in the heart of Sophrosyne, the City of the Gods.

As the Scouting & Reconnaissance Captain of the Elder Guard, Kieran Vistarii deals in Shadows, blood, and subterfuge. Scarred by his past but dedicated to safeguarding Sophrosyne's future, Kieran's self-imposed isolation is easily masked by charm and cocksure energy. Strange disappearances have kept his cadre busy as of late, and yet the captain finds himself sidetracked, distracted by the inexplicable allure of a certain golden-eyed Conduit and her curious mind.

They both know better than to get involved, but the Fates have other plans. The dark threads of prophecy were woven long ago, and the ties that bind just might be what it takes to mend these broken, star-crossed souls… or what forges a deadly bond that could damn them all.

Of Blood and Aether is the first book in the Harbingers series, a captivating and character-driven dark romantasy saga. Rife with sizzling tension, gut-wrenching angst, addictive banter, and ever-growing stakes, the Harbingers series is perfect for fans of A Court of Thorns & Roses, Fourth Wing, and From Blood & Ash.

The words God’s damned

This is a good book & listen but the words God’s damned was said so many times it became irritating. I’m currently listening and since writing this I’ve heard God’s damned 5 times!! I almost stopped listening multiple times because of it.

female voice was hard to get into

I felt it was hard to get into the female pov of the story from the narrator chosen to narrate this book.

Narration and performance was lacking!

Female voice was hard to listen to and really get into. Male kept mispronouncing words and sounding like he was just now reading as performing rather than preparing then performing. Story line was somewhat boring and it could be because of the performance. Took 3x as long to get through this than it should have.

mixed bag

Review: Of Blood and Aether by Harper Hawthorne
⭐️⭐️⭐️🌶🌶🌶 ‼️May contain Spoilers‼️

This one is kind of a mixed bag for me. I was super duper excited for it and felt like there were some things that were just not for me.

Things I liked:
The world is very interesting, I get a sort of magitech feel where its modern or almost futuristic in certain ways via magic while maintaining a classic fantasy tech level. Its still very sword and sorcery, but the main city it takes place in is this socialist utopia of learning.

The autism rep is spot on. The fmc is clearly autistic and her internal monologue shows this very well. The mmc is also very understanding, observant, and picks up on her quirks and caters to them/likes them.

Great lgbtq+ rep with both mc's being Bi, a few side characters being lesbian or bi, and the world treats it like its totally normal and no one thinks twice about it.

The magic system is quite well thought out and detailed without being overly complex. The narrative gradually shows how it works without infodumping.

The lore is very rich with hints at a detailed history for the world.

Now things that didn't work as well for me:

The fmc is pretty ignorant of the plot while the mmc is dealing with it in the background. He's also completely obsessed with her from day 1 and most of his pov chapters from the moment he sees her for the first 2/3 of the book are just him going on and on and on about how hot and sexy and smart and clever she is when she hasn't actually done anything to show those qualities. She also does this about him, but to a lesser extent because she's also the way we learn how the magic works and the history of the world.

Both mc's have casual sex with other people before they get together and as a demisexual, I just can't identify with this behavior. Not slut-shaming anyone, it just isn't for me.

I also kind of despised the ending, which is a big cliffhanger, and also makes me really angry at the mmc.

This has become my favorite listen of 2024

Of Blood and Aether by Harper Hawthorne is a captivating fantasy with rich world-building, compelling characters, and a heartfelt slow-burn romance. The blend of magic, action, and emotional depth makes it a truly unforgettable read.

loved this story

If you're into dominant male main characters and a slow-burn romance that keeps you on edge, you'll absolutely love Kiernan in Of Blood and Aether. Harper Hawthorne weaves an intoxicating tale that perfectly balances steamy tension, intricate world-building, and a storyline that pulls you in from the first page.

Kiernan is everything you want in a MMC—commanding, intense, and yet layered with complexities that make him irresistibly captivating. The chemistry between the characters simmers and builds at the perfect pace, leaving you eager for more with every chapter.

This story was so good, and I can't wait to see where Harper Hawthorne takes us next. If you're a fan of dark romance with fantasy elements, this book deserves a spot on your TBR

One thing about this audio book is that the female narrator I had a hard time hearing at times, it felt like she kind of mumbled.

Surprisingly my favorite audiobook of the year!

Was pleasantly surprised by how good the story itself was but the audio characters need their own flowers. They did amazing and really made listening to the story an experience. 5/5 across the board! Can’t wait for the next book!

Phenomenal!

I soooo enjoyed this book! The budding romance between our FMC & MMC was beautifully executed, with just the right amount of magic, world building, and intrigue for a first in a series. I generally don’t like to begin unfinished series because if I like it, I am so incredibly impatient waiting for the next book to come out… certainly going to be dying for book two now until it releases. Also really enjoyed the narration, though I do wish they would have the characters do their OWN dialogue within the other characters POV chapters, but thats a pet peeve of mine across all books and not just this one.

Listened the whole way through

It mostly captured my attention and I listened on 1x speed the whole way through in one weekend. Still, I don’t think I’ll recommend it for a few reasons.

One is that the narrators were good when they voiced their own gender, but not very good when they voiced the opposite gender. I wish it would’ve been a duet narration instead of dual narration. (Btw some mispronounced words in there, too, fyi, especially near the very end).

Another reason is that I thought the story itself was lacking. I hate to say it because I’ve never written a book and I’m not trying to insult the author. I’m sure this was a project so intricate and time-consuming and such a labor of love. I did enjoy it, but I just thought the writing was lacking, and more than just d/t the object-of-the-preposition pet peeve.
