About this listen

Stone Town, Zanzibar, early 1866

RyAnne Hunter is determined to stop her father from leaving for the continent of Africa, where he plans to start a mission station. And she only has until morning. Tonight at the Harcourts' Annual Ball will be her last chance to change his mind. She must succeed! Papa's health, and her future, depend on her success. But, as if her task isn't difficult enough, now the insufferable Captain Dawson has agreed to guide Papa's expedition!

After spending six months at sea, Captain Trent Dawson only wants to think about rest and relaxation. However, when he's recruited by a British naval officer to help put an end to a slave smuggling ring, the perfect opportunity presents itself in Dr. Hunter, who needs a guide to the Interior. Now if he can just help the doctor without spending too much time with the man's troublesome and flighty youngest daughter.

A thrilling historical romance from the time of missionary explorer David Livingstone.

Exceptional Historic Tale of 1866 Africa

The first in a series of stories that take place beginning in Stone Town, Zanzibar (continent of Africa) in 1866, On the Wings of a Whisper is a LOT more than a romance. I’m not a fan of romance novels, but I AM a fan of historical books with a story to tell, and this one fits the bill nicely. Slave traders, Ivory merchants, English occupation of Africa, and the clash of Christian principals make up the main ingredients of this intriguing story. A love story is brewing between the young mixed breed daughter of Dr. Ryan Hunter and Captain Trent Dawson, but it isn’t syrupy or overbearing. Dr. Hunter is very ill, but bound and determined to leave the mainland to start a mission. And Ryanne, his daughter is just as determined to stop him. Great, faith-filled story!

An amazing series . . .

I have listened to the whole series but will only write this one review, because I imagine that once most people listen to this opening part they will continue on to the remaining ones.

The series is beautifully written and deeply moving. It is essentially about the struggles of a young woman in the face of one of humanity’s worst atrocities. Although Christian in orientation, it does not provide pat answers. A beautiful romance is also thread throughout the story.

As far as narration, I am amazed at the work of Mary Sarah Agliotta. In fact I found this series because I had come across my first book so beautifully narrated by her—and just had to listen to her again. After having listened to almost 200 audiobooks, I can say that she and one other narrator (Juliet Stevenson) equally share the space as my top narrator!

A book that MIGHT be a good one, Terrible reader

Would you try another book from Lynnette Bonner and/or Mary Sarah Agliotta?

Perhaps the author, but NOT the reader!

What did you like best about this story?

an interesting storyline

Would you be willing to try another one of Mary Sarah Agliotta’s performances?

NO

What would have made this romance irresistible?

A different reader, and a bit less melodrama

Any additional comments?

I'm not sure if the book itself is overly melodramatic, but the way it is read makes it sound horribly so.

Worth Buying All Six...6 out of 5 stars

Narration was masterfully done. Story is Excellent. I hate when publishers break an entire story up. I bought all 6 audios in this Spices Series. So far, I just finished Book 5 & I feel as if I've Learned something new, helpful, and I would not have these lessons learned w/o the series. It pulled me right in. Each ending chapter is, indeed, cliffhanger. Which makes for an incredible adventure..from the heights of society to sailing the high seas to being taken hostage. What else could we want? Clean, Historical, Christian Fiction. 6 out of 5 stars! Great Job to both L. Bonner & this amazing Narrator!

Excellent audio and book

So far, despite the atrocity of the story line, I am captivated by this historical work.

A Good Book For Insomniacs

The story is dull with little substance and has a strange ending. The narrators voice is soft and everybody sounds alike. I think it would be a good audio to play for someone with insomnia; it could lull you to sleep and you wouldn't feel like you had missed anything.

Good story but...

This is an enjoyable book, but it is not complete. You have to continue with a new chapter or set of chapters by down loading another section. This creates an inflated cost and is difficult to manage when listening on trips. I hope I never start listening to a book broken up in such a manner again.

Historical Romance

Struggled to finish. Did not enjoy the book. Did not enjoy the style of that time in history.
