About this listen

School should be the safest place in the world. Not this winter. Detective Michael Yorke faces his most harrowing case yet.

When 12-year-old Paul disappears from school, Yorke’s only clue is a pool of animal blood. Fearing the worst, he turns toward the most obvious suspect: recently released local murderer Thomas Ray. But as the snow in Salisbury worsens, Ray’s mutilated body is discovered, and Yorke is left with no choice but to journey into the sinister heart of a demented family that has plagued the community for generations.

Can he save the boy? Or will the evil he discovers change him forever?

The shocking and exhilarating new crime thriller will have you listening late into the night.

Praise for the book:

"An explosive and visceral debut with the most terrifying of killers. Wes Markin is a new name to watch out for in crime fiction, and I can't wait to see more of Detective Yorke." (best-selling crime author Stephen Booth)

A family of killers, the race to save a child.

*I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.*

A family with a long history of mental health issues, warnings for blood and animal slaughter.

An interesting story that I believe I would have enjoyed more reading it because of a high amount of characters. I was somehow lost a few times because of this.

The narrator was amazing and made me want to finish the story, helping me be interested in it throughout. He kept a good pace, differenciated every character with his voice and narrated properly. I loved his accent.

The characters were well rounded and their stories explained, but I think there are too many for an audiobook.

I enjoyed listening to it, but I believe the descriptions of animal slaughtering and their body parts was horrible. Those were the sections where I lost interest.

If you're not easily impressed by this, I recommend the book.

More Detective Work and Less Gore

One Last Prayer for the Rays
A DCI Yorke Thriller, Book 1
By: Wes Markin

WARNING ******** If you are sensitive to blood and gore you need to avoid this book!!!

This is a mystery thriller that starts fast and keeps the listener spellbound throughout, If you can get past the gore. The Ray family are the most extremely

dysfunctional kind of people imaginable.

A twelve year old boy disappears from school and the hunt is on. Many twists and turns and some unexpected surprises thrown in.

I probably won't follow this series if it continues like this one. A lot more detective work with less gore would help.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. Aubrey Parsons gave an exciting performance.

Tense 3.5 Stars!

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I wish we had gotten to know Yorke better as he's the biggest piece in the puzzle. There were a ton of characters that I got lost in, almost too many characters. I liked that the action began immediately and that the tension was gripping for the duration of the book. I liked the pacing and the dark tone, espeically for a murder mystery thriller. Parsons' narration grew on me as the story progressed, and added to the tension and tone with his own dialect and characterization. Don't want to ruin anything, but brace yourself for the end!

Pig Thriller

Felt it was a bit drawn out and with many characters to remember but I did enjoy. There is a lot of action with twists, interbreeding, kidnapping, torture, and sexual scenes best part was the last 1/3 of book with interesting ending. The scenes with the pigs were gross and what the Rays family did. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Thank you

it needs an in-depth prequel

I enjoy the overall story as I was reading this book I kept feeling I was reading this book out of sequence that there had to be a book that came before it I found that there was a short story written about the main character very well written short story which it answered some of the questions i had about this book but it did not answer all of them I wish there was another book I love the characters in this book but their backstories are foggy to me do you believe this author is on the right track and is going to develop into a incredible storyteller I will definitely be keeping my eye out for more of his books

A Few Chapters in It Will Grab You

The very beginning of the book put me off slightly. Am I ever glad that I read a little bit more; the rest of the book was a great read. There’s lots of action and a few surprises.

Gruesome.

I love mysteries and crime stories but this was unnecessarily gruesome with not much suspense. Unrelenting misery.

A great story

Imo this book was a great story, that kept me wanting to just keep listening to it regardless of what I was supposed to be doing. The flow in the story kept you in the story, instead of being interested in this part and just wanting to skip a different part because it just didn't seem quite as part of the story.

I thought that the narration was done extremely well throughout the whole book. This is the first book that I have listened to from this narrator, but I will definitely be looking up more of his work.
