Publisher's summary

The season of Yule is fast approaching, but not all in the barony of Löngutangar are festive. For it has been two years since Salem disappeared. Two years without word. Two years without their friend. New rumors speak to a possible location, and a crack team sets out to find Salem and bring him home. But does what they find even qualify as human?

No sooner does Salem come home than he is visited by the Techkuza. Due to financial debts as well as technological and personal transgressions, Salem has been summoned across the world for an audience in the Asian supercity Trinity Neon. There, Salem encounters both familiar faces and a host of new enemies. His tenuous bonds of family, and his own mental stability, are tested beyond their limits. The events in Trinity Neon will not only change his life forever, but will also determine the fate of the world.

One Piece at a Time is a sprawling, heart-pounding, and heartbreaking adventure across deadly seas and into foreign lands that culminates in a moment all must experience. What happens when your best isn’t good enough?

Where's #5!?

This damn guy. Gubson's fantastic imagination has had me up until sunrise almost every night for a fortnight, because I can't stop listening to see what happens next. Each book gets better and better. This one, though...damn. It's a real gut puncher, in all the best, most awful ways. And it's a cliffhanger!?!? Where's #5, Gibson!?!

You know it's good writing when it causes such intense emotional reactions. I started listening to one of his other series, the Villains Rule series, last week as a break from writing a particularly difficult sequence in my current story. I figured I could use a fluffy book to drone in the background while I played ps4 and gave my storytelling mind a break. Imagine my surprise when, almost 2 weeks later, I've finished that series AND all of the books in this Technomancer series! It's not often that an author can blindside me like that, but he did. Kick-ass!

And the narrator, Jeffrey Kafer, is remarkable. His delivery of Father Grim is perfect.

Buy this book. But first, read the 3 that come before it. Trust me, the internet stranger that insists you'll love this.

Just keeps getting better!

So I’m not going to lie, I’m a bit of a fanboy for M.K. Gibson and Jeffrey Kafer. I once described them as the peanut butter and jelly of authors and narrators. They are my absolute favorites right now, their work together keeps getting better with every new story. I love M.K.Gibsons writing his story speak to me as a middle aged man raised on Saturday morning cartoons, and rushing home to watch thunder at sand silver hawks after school. These books have all the pulp sci-fi fun that you can hope for. It’s a world that I have enjoyed visiting over and over again. These are the books that 13 year old me wanted, and 40 year old me can enjoy. After you are done here go check out Gibson and kafers other work together. Give them all your money. You won’t be sorry.

M.K. Gibson is a literal butthole

Because when this book ends, I shed actual tears of grief that I have to wait for Book 5 to come out. This entire series (and all of his others) are incredible. Action packed, humorous and filled with characters who each have their own personality and spirit.

It just sucks having to wait for the next MORTAL, Shadowmaster and Technomancer books…a lot.

Completely epic story!

Beautiful story, amazing heartfelt moments And all the bloody action you can handle. The story it spends on the universe or the world. It never feels like too much. But I will say this book was rough to read. ( Even though I've read it like 7 times and own the audio book) You keep it expecting some him to catch a break. But as always our Salem rises above it to become the bad A** he is. You see a different level of maturity in Salem in this book. He's still silly funny hilarious all that good stuff and the fight scenes are on these massive levels that we haven't really seen yet in the books until this point. You also see in Salem how all the events Of the previous books have affected him.
Definitely a great read or listen!!!

Excellent story and narration!

One Piece at a Time (The Technomancer Novels, Book 4) by M. K. Gibson and narrated by Jeffrey Kafer is a superb fourth book in the series. It delivered beyond my expectations- 5 stars all around (would give more if possible).

What’s it about? Honestly I’ve been marinating on this review for a few days as no matter what I type, it won’t do this book justice. Salem is back and dealing with some new realities. Themes revolve around the complex relationships between father and son and dealing with PTSD. The world building and character development is outstanding. Fast-paced action and humor throughout. I didn’t expect so much emotion, it brings you into the story and might stir a lil’ something in you.

Jeffrey Kafer, the narrator, gave a stellar performance. Inflection, pace, and consistency are spot on and add to the story.

If you’re reading this, you clearly are interested in the book and/or series and the answer is: yes, you should listen to it.

“I tried manscaping. It itched. A lot.”
“Fallen One, I thought, feeling my balls grow three times their size. Just call me the testicular Grinch.”
“The thing about living in the soulless future was that nothing was new. Just repackaging of the old.”

Parent guidance/trigger warnings: I won’t be listing them all, but will say there is an underlying darkness to the book (but also hope)- things like torture, PTSD, relationship difficulties, battles, depression, thoughts of suicide (author discusses this in the From the Author section at the end of the book). Language used: Fx150, Sx102.

I Don't Cry, But When I Do...

A little disclaimer, I'm a geek for these types of books and especially series that reads and sounds like a comic book issue. The 4th in the Technomancer series with the winning combination of Gibson and Kafer has me convinced that this could be a video series. As my daughter says, "Feels for the win!"
The best example of this is how relational it was from my aspect of a son and a father. Gibson wrote a masterpiece in nine acts with a garnish of horror, suspension and comedy on the side. Mix into that, several exciting combat sequences that would put the Matrix series to shame, and you have the core of an award winning series. No, when I say 9 acts, I'm speaking about THIS book alone. The relationships between Salem and his father, Salem and Father Grimm, Salem and TJ, Salem and his own son, Jenson and even TJ and his Dad. All those relationships were composed in a careful balance that drove the story as much as the plot. I had tears as I witnessed those relationships grow through the series. I could easily see the hopes for redemption from all the characters. Well done Gibson. Very well done.
Honestly, there was so much other stuff to love and react to, I could have easily passed mentioning it, but the perma-death of a beloved character warrants mentioning. This is an epic and multifaceted story arc that just couldn't be told in one reasonable sized book. It's deep, twisting and full of holes for the readers head to roll down. It leaves us with so many questions that can only be answered in the next installment.
Yes, we start with an emotional slap in the face, a punch in the gut and then, a kick to the nards so hard it makes you head pop off. All the "feels" are covered right down to the "Awwwwwe" and the damned thing leaves us wanting more. "MORE!" I say.
As a standalone book, it can be just as impactful, but I STRONGLY recommend getting the series from the start. This 'issue' is a keymark of the series built upon the foundation of the others before it. Yes, Gibson covers all the needed review in this one to handle it being a standalone, but without the foundation he's built in this world, the relationships between people/characters and places won't have the same level of impact.
What can I say about Kafer? Jeffery Kafer has long been a favorite of mine and he seems to blend into the characters and scenarios as if he was born to play the roles. His effortless delivery of lines and understanding as if he wrote the thing, made it all real. He does blend well with many authors concepts and is an asset to nearly anything he's done. I will say this, for "One Piece at a Time" and Jeffrey Kafer, I honestly felt that Kafer cried himself during a few scenes. If he didn't, I'd be surprised as the emotion that came through his voice and the depth of his acting felt to me, as if it came from the core of his being! Thank you Jeffrey!!
