About this listen

From the former president and CEO of the United States Tennis Association - the first Black woman and youngest person ever to hold the position - comes a behind-the-scenes look at the leadership skills involved in hosting the US Open, the largest and most lucrative sports event in the world - lessons that can be applied across business and to any life challenge.

One of professional tennis’ Grand Slam Tournaments, the US Open has been described as a 14-day Super Bowl. This single tennis championship, held annually in New York City, attracts top professionals from around the globe, generates more money than any other sporting event - or any other sport over an entire season - and attracts more than 700,000 attendees and millions of television viewers.

In Own the Arena, Katrina Adams offers a privileged, singular inside look at this sensational global event, while elaborating on what makes tennis the only sport of a lifetime. She opens with the women’s 2018 championship match between Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams that ended in boos. This was Adams’ last year as president, and the whole world was watching. How would she respond? How should the press be handled? What needs to be said to Osaka? Serena? What does this break from decorum mean for the Open and the sport?

As Adams shares a wealth of stories from her career and personal life, as well as insights from top tennis professionals, she provides invaluable information on meeting life’s tests both on the tennis court and off. Own the Arena offers fresh perspectives on having presence, being remembered, directing a conversation, and moving boldly in spaces where "you are the only one". It also covers good sportsmanship - treating others with respect and by being inclusive and open to diverse perspectives. Tennis is said to be 90 percent mental; this audiobook shows how to take the elements of mental fortitude and use them to achieve greatness. By embracing and expressing one’s inner grace and humanity, Adams shows, you can own the arena.

Inspirational!

I'm so glad that this book was audio, because I would have bought the book, either way to support a fellow Whitney M. Young Magnet High School classmate. The audio version allowed me to actually read it, complete it, and absorb every pearl until the end. I am inspired, enlightened, and feel even more connected to the author, Katrina who graduated a year or 2 ahead of me. I remember her very well from HS. I'm so proud to learn that she also grew up in my neighborhood on Chicago's West Side. I grew up in the Garfield Park area and learned to swim there. I swam at Avalon Park when I visited my grandparents on the South Side, and of course in high school. I wish I'd kept up with it in college, but I'm still a swimmer today because of Garfield Park. I felt the sentiments of her friend who said that we've done well for kids from Chicago's West Side! I also loved hearing her mention people that I know from high school like Daniel Duster and my sorority sister, Wendy Willis. I felt like I was right there with my Dolphin classmate on this journey. I'm so proud, and grateful for every accomplishment that she has described in these chapters. She probably has no idea how much I, and all of her classmates of the mid-80s claim every one of these accomplishments just as we do Michelle Obama's.
Thanks so much for her service to her sport, to young people, and to the readers of this book.

Inspiring and applicable to so much in life

Katrina Adams' book really brings home the experience of being and succeeding as the only one in the room, no matter if that's the board room, the office, as part of any team or organization. She shares real stories where there was real consequence and outcome. And, she shares the life lessons and perspective that I so needed to hear. It is absolutely refreshing to learn as much as I did about Katrina's journey into professional tennis and how she positions herself without being positioned by others. This was an amazing listen all around.

Exceptional Life Lessons

this was an awesome story. beautifully written and recited. I admire the ease at which the story was told, weaving nuggets of wisdom learned through lessons on the court.
each chapter was a reminder to be great, open for opportunities, give back, and rally for yourself at all cost.
