Publisher's summary

Our era of professional and familial pressures, constant connection, and a renewed debate on "having it all" presents unprecedented challenges to contemporary women. In Persephone Rising, celebrated scholar of depth psychology and archetypes Carol S. Pearson brings a fresh vision for meeting those challenges and rising above them, as only she can.

Drawing on her profound understanding of myth's enduring power to catalyze transformations, Pearson guides listeners on a journey of self-discovery, teaching us how to activate and apply the archetypes of Demeter and Persephone, as well as Zeus and Dionysus, in our own lives. Illuminating ancient wisdom for a modern audience, Persephone Rising offers meaningful and effective strategies to answer the call to heroism in our own lives. Just as Demeter and Persephone discovered, in the midst of great difficulty, their own powers, gifts, and abilities for creating a better path not only for themselves but the world, Persephone Rising teaches that each one of us has more options than choosing whether to lean in or out; we have the power to change ourselves and thus our world.

Critic reviews

"Carol Pearson's rich revisioning focuses on Persephone's rising, on her return to the upper world as emblematic of the power inherent in all of us to move beyond failure and conflict to lives filled with joy, fearlessness and abundance." (Christine Downing, author of The Long Journey Home)

Required reading for life!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Nature speaks to us profoundly if we had the art to listen. When we were closer to nature and matriarchy had more power to speak, the forces we must contend with for life were revealed in wonderful story. That is mythology, and not the simplistic interpretation and short shrift it typically gets. Thank you Carol Pearson for your incredible research and even greater gift of understanding in beautifully revealing our human nature.

Fascinating book, terrible, robotic narratior

Would you try another book from Carol S. Pearson and/or Callie Beaulieu?

I found the text itself -- as written by Carol S. Pearson -- to be very interesting, illuminating, and unusual. I was so drawn to much of what she said that I will purchase this book as a book so that I can enjoy it on the page.

The narration by Callie Beaulieu was absolutely bizarre. It had all of the qualities of a hurried robot, such that I had to go back and check that there actually was a human involved in the reading. I gave a quick listen to a couple of other audible titles with which she was involved, and she sounded perfectly lovely -- so why on earth she did her darndest to sound like a computer on double speed with this subtle, nuanced work is beyond me. I had to stop listening partway through because I could not bear the terrible narration. It is that bad.

Do you think Persephone Rising needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

The idea that we are acting within large, powerful archetypal energies is not original to Carol Pearson, but what she does with it is really unique. I'd love to see her continue to apply her ideas.

Any additional comments?

This is a wonderful book and it deserved careful, attentive narration. Instead it received one of the strangest readings I have ever heard -- truly, I absolutely believed (until I went back to check) that Audible had foregone a human reader and used a computer prototype that just wasn't working well. Siri would have done a much better job, and I don't like Siri.

Overall command of the subject expressed like a storyteller.

I appreciate the integrated and inclusive approach of this work. I feel invited into female perspective and wisdom and got to learn a thing or four that I can readily apply to my fiction writing and roles as a husband and father of three young ladies.

Wonderful book/Robotic narrator

I loved this book and the in-depth exploration of the four archetypes in the myth of Persephone and Demeter -- the content is 5 starts!! Unfortunately, the narrator is one of the worst I've ever experienced on Audible: her narration is terribly robotic and includes many mispronunciations of words. Argh!! It is a testament to the quality of the content that I was able to listen to all of the book. My heart actually goes out to the author in that it is a travesty to have her brilliant work represented this way. Maybe read the hard copy instead??

Should you read this? The answer is Y-E-S!

I am nowhere near as articulate as Carol as she weaves myth and moderday seamlessly to bring us all smack dab in the middle of ancient rites that may assist us in navigating this roller coaster of a world we find ourselves in today.

Robotic speed reading, distracts from the content

I'm a few chapters into this book, which appears to have very thoughtful and compelling content. So please tell me why does Audible have to choose a narrator that reads soo fast and in doing so, completely distracts from the whole premise of the book, which is the exploration of the mythological depths of ones psyche. It seems incongruous..If this book were narrated with the care and articulation of the author, it may have been an 18 hr book instead of 12hrs 48min, which for us as the listeners could have savored!

…no.

I really tried with this title. The mispronunciations, bland/robotic/mind-numbing narration, choppy and adolescent storytelling of the myth in the beginning, the authors incessant touting of her academic titles and credentials (no doubt trying to establish something, but I feel it’s not helping her in this context at all)… I really tried. It’s insufferable. Unless you also enjoy your steak over-done and dry. In that case, this may be the book for you.
