About this listen

This unique and fundamentally liberating book shows us that examining our attitudes toward money - earning it, spending it, and giving it away - can offer surprising insight into our lives, our values, and the essence of prosperity.

Lynne Twist, a global activist and fundraiser, has raised more than $150 million for charitable causes. Through personal stories and practical advice, she demonstrates how we can replace feelings of scarcity, guilt, and burden with experiences of sufficiency, freedom, and purpose. In this Nautilus Award-winning book, Twist shares from her own life, a journey illuminated by remarkable encounters with the richest and poorest, from the famous (Mother Teresa and the Dalai Lama) to the anonymous but unforgettable heroes of everyday life.

Really bad narration

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would not- I tell them the content and message of Lynn Twist's book may be valuable, but its hard to get it with the annoying narration. I am planning to buy the book in print so I can actually absorb it.

Would you be willing to try another book from Lynne Twist? Why or why not?

Only with a different narrator.

Would you be willing to try another one of Cynthia Barrett’s performances?

Never- this narration was excruciating to listen to- it literally made me cringe.

Any additional comments?

I've listened to many audiobooks while commuting 15+ years and this narrator was like chalk on a blackboard. She was painfully over-articulated and her tonality was just plain strange. It come off very pretentious and made the content seem insincere and self indulgent when I am not sure that is the spirit in which the book was written. I saw other comments and thought I could still enjoy the content while tolerating the narration but not so.

More than just a book on money

I love the sufficiency mindset and the idea that money is like water - flowing through our lives. While Lynn masterfully tells stories that describe all facets of money, this book is so much deeper. Touching on spirituality and transformation of humanity.

I'm very glad I read (listened to) this book. It constantly had me popping with new insights, nodding my head is amazement, and on a few occasions, deeply moved and crying.

It has made me rethink how I can use money to live out the impact I wish to make on the universe. Not just try to keep as much as I can until I die.

Phenomenal Book, didn't totally love the narrator

Would you listen to The Soul of Money again? Why?

yes, because the content is important to me

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

No, she mispronounces words like Marin (Marin County), Deva (a female spiritual deity) that no one bothered to tutor her on or look up, but most importantly, she sounds too business like for the way I feel someone in Lynne Twist's position would actually sound like.... a bit cold and informational, rather than really warm.

Brilliant expose on money and our identity with it

Loved the fresh perspective. She challenges many standing beliefs about money. Reading this will make you uncomfortable!

Game-changer alert…

Wow. I needed a different perspective in the personal finance domain. I got it here.

Haven’t come across a non-fiction book that’s engendered this much thought realignment in a long time.

I can’t believe this book isn’t more well known/marketed more in finance. I was reading a different book on a completely different topic that quoted this book- the only reason I found it!

And I have zero issues with the narrator. Interesting that so many people do… promise the content is worth it!

Definitely Preachy towards the end, but worthy listen

Lynne’s perspective as a fundraising philanthropist offers a valuable perspective in the conversation around scarcity, and the socially constructed power of money. Towards the end though, it felt like being in a time share pitch to save the planet, feed the hungry, and stamp out deep rooted corruption. All of which are important, but it did seem heavy handed. Nonetheless, it delivers on its promise to make you re-examine your relationship with money.

Interesting and informative

I have listened to this book multiple times and I have to say, I enjoy the content AND the narrator. I listened to a sample of another of Lynne Twist’s books, hoping for the same narrator..

There are lots of stories and details that are easier to absorb with the perfect enunciation and expression of the narrator.. I appreciate it!

Very interesting subject matter .. gives you plenty to ponder about your own attitude toward money.

Inspiring

She very competently puts in their place many of the beliefs so fondly held by our consumer society. With stories from her work around the world to end hunger and her insights gathered through this work she offers a perspective on money that could heal much that is wrong on this planet including particularly in the west, our disconnection from each other.
