Publisher's summary

A lively, deeply reported tour of the science and strategies helping athletes like Tom Brady, Serena Williams, Carli Lloyd, and LeBron James redefine the notion of “peak age”.

Season after season, today’s sports superstars seem to defy the limits of physical aging that inevitably sideline their competitors. How much of the difference is genetic destiny and how much can be attributed to better training, medicine, and technology? Is athletic longevity a skill that can be taught, or a mental discipline that can be mastered? Can career-ending injuries be predicted and avoided?

Journalist Jeff Bercovici spent extensive time with professional and Olympic athletes, coaches, and doctors to find the answers to these questions. His quest led him to training camps, tournaments, hospitals, anti-aging clinics, and Silicon Valley startups, where he tried out cutting-edge treatments and technologies firsthand and investigated the realities behind health fads like alkaline diets, high-intensity interval training, and cryotherapy. Through fascinating profiles and first-person anecdotes, Bercovici illuminates the science and strategies extending the careers of elite older athletes, uncovers the latest advances in fields from nutrition to brain science to virtual reality, and offers empowering insights about how the rest of us can find peak performance at any age.

Please read this book!

Great book! I’m training for an Ironman and had so many great nuggets to help through training.

Thanks Jeff!

The Worst Narration Ever

I enjoyed the book, but this man's voice caused my wife to recoil in terror.

Great Information, Absolutely Horrible Voice

The reviews warned me, and they didn't disappoint. I am REALLY interested in the material in this book, so despite the poor reviews on the person's voice reading it... I bought it.

The information was awesome. I loved the writing style and how the author delivered the information.

That said, I couldn't listen for more than 1 hour at a time because the voice and inflection of the person reading it (not the author) is awful. This makes me question if readers are even screened at all. I've never had someone's reading voice be so bad that I have to limit my listening time. I guess there's a first time for everything.

Good book, bad voice.

The content of the book is nice. The author builds confidence and has some good metaphors to help describe scenarios.

The narrator is so hard to listen to at first, really extending the last part of every sentence. I got more used to the voice at the end, but will try to avoid books with this narrator again.

Interesting and well researched, not so precisely geared towards the amateur athlete

I am 35 and about to compete in my first 5k. I was hoping this book would distill some information and inspiration for an aging woman looking to invest in athleticism more than I ever have in my life.

It wasn’t exactly that, but it was still educational and intriguing, and I got many useful takeaways.
