Publisher's summary

She was the flower of an East End slum who rose to become a star. But Poppy Duveen quit the stage to marry Freddie Plummett, the only real gentleman she had ever known - the bounder who died. When Freddie died, Poppy wasleft the castle, but she was also left in the clutches of Freddie's formidableuncle, Hugo, the dazzling Duke of Guildham.

How could she admit, even to herself, this dangerous attraction? Instead, Poppy tried to turn her back on it - but it was no use. Clearly, Hugo thought her a mere waif, a common poor relation. Well, she'd show him and his snobbish family. She'd return to the stage as Poppy Plummett, conquer London, and make fools of them all!

Fun in every way

I enjoyed this book tremendously. The story was just lovely and Lindy Nettleton is absolutely perfect in the telling. Perhaps my favorite in the series!

One of this author’s best!

This book is more gritty and complex than the typical Chesney/Beaton light and cozy novel. Poppy lives in the London slums with an alcoholic father and two young sisters. She raises herself from poverty by becoming a singer in a theater group and then marrying a Duke's nephew. The marriage seems destined for disaster, but there's an unexpected twist. Poppy ends up back on the stage as the lead performer in a wildly popular theatrical. Is the author of the musical in love with her? What about the Duke? There are many twists and turns to get to the happy ending. Overall entertaining and worth a read.

lovely little romance

Marion Chesney's romances are fluffy. there's usually not much to them but they're enjoyable as Light reading. however this one is lovely. no abrupt changes from the characters. no weird plot twists to extend the length of the book. just a very nicely done Romance. not a bodice ripper but very enjoyable!
