Publisher's summary

A shocking thriller inspired by the true stories of a male prison officer in a women’s prison....

Prison Officer Jim Dalton works on the male side of HMP Peterborough. It’s a dangerous place, fuelled by testosterone-driven violence, but he has the prisoners’ respect. When Dalton is transferred to the female side of the prison, his next shift is so easy he can’t believe that the officers over there get paid the same wages. He sleeps well for the first time in years.

Billie hasn’t had it easy in life, and she has earned the nickname Damage because she has been known to cause some! Ending up in prison might have been inevitable, but Billie hasn’t given up on her dreams yet. If there’s a way to get out of prison faster, she’s going to find it.

When Dalton is assigned to the young offenders’ wing, dealing with female prisoners no longer seems so simple, and in Billie he fears he may have met his match. As Billie starts to turn the screw, Dalton faces losing everything....

Taking a break from his best-selling DI Barton series, Ross Greenwood returns with this shocking and utterly compelling glimpse behind the bars of a women's prison. From a man who walked the landings himself....

Fantastic!

Ross Greenwood and David Thorpe expertly delivered the sights and sounds of everyday prison, but more importantly the emotional toll it takes on everyone behind the walls of HMP Peterborough.

I was mesmerized by the character development. Each character was so real – from the thugs in the men’s ward to the damaged and broken girls in the women’s ward. Written from the POV of Jim Dalton, prison guard, husband and father, Ross weaves you in and out of his life.

As a tenured and respected prison guard, Jim finds himself in uncharted territory after being moved to the women’s ward. He’s used to the dangers dealing with the men, the fighting, the life and death situations it puts him in, and the stress it brings to his life. Now he finds himself in a different kind of danger – one he didn’t see coming. Jim starts questioning the man he truly is and if his moral compass is working properly. And as the reader, you start questioning your own.

As a devoted husband, Jim wonders what went wrong and why can’t he make his wife happy. The story line is so relatable it pulls you in and tugs on your heartstrings.

As a doting father who loves his children dearly, Jim is just a Dad doing the best he can for the love of his family.

As a new found friend, you take pleasure in the joy and laughter Jim finds along the way.

This book will make you happy, sad, angry and everything in between. It’s Brilliant!

It's messy...

Firstly, this is absolutely not a thriller, it's a melodrama. Secondly, if u ever wondered what prison life is like, you'll love this story. Thirdly, Dalton and Billie deserve each other because they are both hedonistic, selfish and immature. Great narration and I couldn't stop listening.

Terrific read! Such an inside look at the prison system and quite the thriller! I hope Ross Greenwood has more of this up his sleeve!

Incredible and Touching

I loved everything about this book. I’m a 32 year old father of 2 girls.

So much in here made me reflect on my own life. It’s witty, sad at times and all around wonderful.

Terrific Listen

At first I was skeptical of a man in a woman’s prison scenario. This book was the complete opposite of what I thought it would be.

The characters were slowly developed but all became more clear.

The action was non stop and I enjoyed it.

David Thorpe brought this story to life!

Not a thriller

I’m so tired of books being labeled thrillers. The way the overview for this book was written it made it sound like this prisoner had some thing over on the guard and was somehow blackmailing him or something. All this book does is talks about a prison guard and his day to day. I could not have been more bored

WE’VE READ IT ALL BEFORE

Excellent narrator. Meh story. Although advertised as a thriller, it’s a too-long and repetitious story about a prison guard betraying himself, his family, and the prison system by getting involved with a young female prisoner’s sexual manipulations. We’ve heard it all before.
