She’s a haunted little songbird. He’s a bodyguard with broken dreams.
I’m a fraud. My climb to the top, the beauty pageant crowns, the music awards … none of them were earned. I stole them all, and they're slipping through my fingers. With my career on the brink of disaster, the last thing I needed were the death threats. Or maybe that was a blessing in disguise.
I thought I was guarding a vapid pop star. Then I heard her sing. Beyond the lights, was a little Songbird that needed help finding her wings. They hired me to protect her from the unknown threat that lurked in the shadows, but the real danger lay behind her haunted autumn eyes.
Protect Your Queen is the start of the Barkada series, following the ambitious siblings as they cement themselves as the world’s most powerful family. The books are interconnected, but can be listened to as a standalone.

The dynamic between Jestiny and her broody, broken-dreams bodyguard (Chris) was delicious. There’s something so satisfying about watching characters with fractured pasts find solace in each other, and these narrators brought that to life so perfectly. I was genuinely invested from start to finish while sneaking in extra minutes of listening time every chance I got.
Now I absolutely need to dive into the rest of the Barkada series because if the rest of the books hit like this, I am SO in for the ride.
I LOVEEED this cast!

I did enjoy the story overall despite what I’m going to say below, lol. I’m saying a lot for just a few scenes that bugged me but overall, this is an enjoyable listen and I really did enjoy Chris’ character a lot.
I did love how music was central to the plot and how much it meant to Chris and his piano and classical music background was so unique for a military/bodyguard character. He was a great protective MMC and his internal dialog was funny.
I thought Jestiny was a little young and acted like it but she is stunted by her very overbearing and controlling family so it tracks. She definitely needed to find herself and come into her own. I don’t feel like she really did that by the end. She did find her sound and herself in her music but at the end, when the threat is over and Chris leaves (is told by her brother) it just kinda time jumps a bit to her long awaited concert. There wasn’t enough fight with them IMO to be together. It was very controlled and almost allowed by her brother in the end. Pilipino family dynamics played a big role in this and I tried to appreciate that but it just irked me.
But what I really had a visceral reaction to was when they were together for the first time. Chris is always big on Jestiny saying what she wants and she at first says she wants him to F her then restates she wants him to make love to her which is VERY different. But Chris proceeds by the first request and doesn’t change course until he realizes she’s a V. Like come on dude. You going to go straight to jamming it in after a woman pivots from Fing to making love? I just could not get past that for some reason. Chris was amazing and better than a fully clothed quick F for the first time he gets to be with his supposed love, passion aside.
But other than that, lol, the book held my interest for sure and the Barkada’s are an interesting group. I will definitely be interested in their books.
Great narrators and enjoyable story

Jestiny Barkada is the cherished youngest sibling in her family, protected by all her older siblings. However, the protectiveness sometimes feels more like a gilded cage. To complicate her life further, she’s hiding a secre and a chilling death threat that prompts her brother to hire a bodyguard, Chris Ambrose. Their initial encounters are anything but smooth, but they soon discover an unexpected bond through their mutual love for music.
Jestiny epitomizes the rebellious spirit of the main character who resists being guarded. She starts off full of attitude, and while she may come across as rude and spoiled, there's a relatable depth to her. At only 22, her youthful mischief is easy to forgive, especially with Chris balancing their dynamic through his refreshing maturity—his go-to tactic is simply to brush off her antics, and it’s surprisingly effective!
Their bond develops gradually, and despite obstacles, including her brother’s disapproval, Chris isn’t shy about his feelings for her.
I can’t wait to delve into the stories of her siblings, especially the eldest Barkada. I am curious about the kind of captivating woman who could potentially soften his edges!
The narration of this duet is absolutely enchanting! Molly Briar and Jason Clarke breathe life into this story in the most delightful way. Molly's flawless Filipina accent adds an exquisite touch—she even sings! And Jason Clarke’s British accent? It’s pure magic; I could listen to him forever.
Thank you Molly Briar for the opportunity the review Protect our Queen. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The narration for this book was stellar. Molly Briar does just as fantastic job as writing as she does narrating. She is able to bring a unique voice to each of her characters. And Jason Clarke… wow, simply wow. His voice was the definition of gravely and growly and it felt like an absolutely perfect portrayal of Chris. This voice pairing may be one of my favorites.

Audio: I fell in love with Molly Briar voice it was so smooth. Jason voice was dreamy as a narrator.
Something different but just as entertaining as the other books, much lighter then the dark romance we get by this wonderful author. Chris is Jestiny bodyguard but with the danger surrounding her can he protect her and keep his feelings in check. It has some spice too.

This was narrated by Jason Clarke and the author herself, Molly Briar and the duet narration is fantastic! I was surprised (in the best way) to learn that not only is Molly an outstanding writer and narrator but she’s also a singer! And man does she have a beautiful voice. Then there’s Jason Clarke…I’ve had a lot of him in my ears this month and I’m not even mad about it! He was the perfect choice for Chris and gave each of the side characters their own voices and personalities which always leaves me speechless. These two played off each other so seamlessly that I just couldn’t get enough and didn’t want to stop listening! The emotion, the tension, the chemistry that they poured into this. WOW! And their accents?! Stunning performances from both of these talented humans.
Definitely adding more Molly Briar to my list! Can’t wait for the rest of this series and to meet the rest of the Barkada siblings 🔥
