About this listen

H. Rider Haggard's classic hero, Allan Quatermain, returns in three brand new adventures all set on the Dark Continent. Thomas Kent Miller's novella has the big-game hunter traveling to Ethiopia to search for the fabled Library of Alexandria.

Erik Franklin pits him against an ancient cult of assassins while Alan J. Porter has the skilled tracker stuck in the middle of the Boer War trying to find the source of a diamond smuggling operation.

Three fast-paced, original tales that capture the mystery and adventure of a wild, untamed land and the man who loved it above all else. Journey with him and embrace the magic that was and remains Africa.

This second book beats #1

Most people (in the U.S.) probably know Quartermain from the abysmal League of Extraordinary Gentlesmen. That is their loss. Some might remember Richard Chamberlain as having played him, that too, is bad for them. The real Quartermain has been around since his introduction in 1885. He has become a big game hunter who has lost histaste for killing, but does so to survive.

This book has three tales of Quartermain, each is a good representation of the character. These writers really knew the character well, they most assuredly put in some serious research. Given that Quartermain was an inspiration for Indiana Jones it is easy to see that they could have really changed the character to fit that flavor more, but they rerally stay true to Quarterman's roots.

Once more, I must commend the narration of Robert Scarlato. The man is just an incredible vocal actor, and he always elevates the material he works on just through the use of his voice. He has swiftly become a favored narrator of mine. In fact, I enjoyed this book so much I went to get part 1, and as soon as I saw Scarlato did not work on the original book I did not want it anymore. I'll probably get it, but that one simple fact stopped me cold.

The stories are packed full of action and drama, and the characters are utterly believable human beings that are rarely fleshed out as well as this for a short story.

This is an excellent set of short stories about an incredible shot. This is one anthology that you won't want to miss.
