Publisher's summary

Flying at the helm of a powerful battle cruiser, former pirate Catarina Vargus leads a collection of colonists, miners, engineers, and navy personnel to establish an outpost far beyond the frontier. The Royal Navy needs a forward operating base in their war against the alien race known as Apex, who has vowed to exterminate all sentient life in the quarter.

Catarina's expedition soon draws the attention of Scandian marauders, driven from their home worlds by plague and war in search of plunder. Enraged by the intrusion into their territory and greedy to seize her fleet and supplies, they mount a fleet of star wolves to destroy her base before it can get a toehold.

The first book of the new sci-fi trilogy by Wall Street Journal best-selling author Michael Wallace, Queen of the Void is an exciting space opera for both new listeners and fans of the best-selling Starship Blackbeard universe alike.

Pure Escapist Cheese

The story reminds me of the Saturday morning sci-fi serials of 1950s, a fun escapist romp but in many ways utterly ridiculous. For example, the characters are a mix of 19th Century British aristocrats and the crew of Johnny Depp's pirate ship and space battles are fought by 'giving a broadside'. That said, the author shows real talent and as long as you can suspend disbelief it really is a fun escapist 'popcorn-book' read with a likeable main character.

A great opening to a thrilling trilogy.

Catarina Vargus, the enrapturing pirate captain and would-be settler queen is back and in fantastic form in this entry to the Blackbeard series. Mr. Wallace manages to wrangle his huge and growing cast into this thrilling adventure. Things are heating up against Apex who will not hesitate to slaughter any sentient lifeform they come across in brutal and terrifying form. Not only do the scattered survivors need all the help they can get, they are facing off against the Viking-like Scandians who would sooner pillage any ship in their midst than join forces.

The performance in this book is, again, wonderful. With such a long series, it feels like we get to really know the characters as time goes by. Their voices are familiar and Mr. Barnes' performance is nuanced and thoughtful. Each character sounds different and speaks in a unique way, people from similar places have similar accents. In the story, some Scadians have had their lips eaten away by plague and that is perceptible in the performance. It's very immersive and perfect for the series.

Strong female character

Queen of the Void by M. Wallace is a space opera with a good strong female lead. This is the first book I have read/listen to by this author.
