Publisher's summary

Get the Gordian Knot bundle, featuring all three books and hours of aliens, war, and explosive military sci-fi action perfect for fans of Rick Partlow, Jay Allan, and David Weber.

Two civilizations clash. A rebellion grows. The fate of the galaxy hangs in the balance.

Technical Chief "Pappy" Gunther is a grizzled, burning-out commando in the United Earth Armed Forces. He ponders a return to civilian life, yet feels a strong sense of belonging to his elite team. When colonists on a far-flung world request aid, a task force from several allied systems is assembled. Pappy and his crack unit are sent to investigate and to engage a mysterious alien force from beyond.

Talks-to-His-Spear is the warrior-caste champion of a matriarchal space empire called the Regime. Leading an army of fanatical, genetically enhanced super-soldiers, he dreams of dying in battle for the glory of his queen. However, he’s beginning to question the motives of this new campaign and fears that he may have to compromise his own deep sense of honor in order to fulfill his tasks.

Nobody expected the two alien cultures to have so much in common and for friendships and alliances to form alongside rivalries. However, when Pappy discovers a rebellion spanning worlds, everything changes. The growing insurrection threatens to tear the Regime—and the galaxy—apart.

an excellent cast of characters and a solid plotline

a very good story set let down by a more wooden narrator. clearly read and of good quality, but some scenes were not given needed weight. still worth your time.

Didn’t grab me

The bundle is worth the credit if your curious. Good story, I am not a fan of the narrator though. Very limited in his character variation.

Great series

Loved this series. A few twists had me predicting an ending that never happened. It’s hard to find a story that can surprise these days, but this one managed to do it.

It was a good series

I enjoyed the books. The were some non-heterosexual relationships that really didn’t add or take away from the story (not sexual at all). The premise of a warrior society with a totally different set of values was very interesting. The battles were good, and the MC is a very serious soldier who will take on anyone and anything with gusto, usually comes out of it beaten up, but he never gives up. His team is very well rounded and loyal to him as their team leader. There are some really good ground battles with unique weapons, powered armor, some mechs and air support. The voice acting was very good and he was able to voice the characters distinctly with several different accents.

Might be better with a different reader

Story had interesting elements, especially the varied cultures and conflict portrayed. Multiple instances of poor grammar in the narration were distracting, and some transitions abrupt. But overall a solid read, and could have been more engaging with a better performer. I will acknowledge that the performer had excellent diction and fine timbre; but his reading cadence was strangely uniform in a way that, while not monotonous, nevertheless has a similar effect. His reading is also somewhat off-putting in terms of pitch--detracting from realism by rising where one would expect a fall or vice versa. Together these characteristics had me wondering if I wasn't listening to a computer read.

enjoyable listening

l have enjoyed listening to this book, getting all four of the books in a bundle was great. We follow a old grisly marine who is at a turning point of his career. Does he quit and take retirement. But its appears that fate has other plans for him and his team.

“Military sci-fi” by some standard

It was good but not great. I prefer more military strategy in my military sci-fi.

However, the political intrigue and culture divergence was a reasonably interesting backdrop.

characters

I enjoyed but not sure about the length and extra detail. May be perfect for some but I like about 20 hours with lots of action.

Good listen

Good story. End of the final book does drag on a bit long but it’s wrapping up stories from 40+ hours of listening
