About this listen

What’s all the fuss lately about the traditional Christian doctrine of hell? Seems like every week there’s a new book, article, or blog debating this long-held view with a growing number of mainstream believers and even Bible scholars beginning to question the status quo. Why are so many people now challenging this core belief with questions, such as:

  • Why isn’t hell mentioned in the Old Testament?
  • How is the gospel “good news for all people” if most people never benefit from it?
  • Is being punished forever for sins committed in a short lifetime really justice?
  • Does everybody really get the same, fair chance to believe in Jesus before they die?
  • Do parents really love their wayward children more than God?
  • Does God ask us to forgive our enemies when he’s not willing to do the same?

Learn the surprising truth about the origins of the hell doctrine and how, upon closer inspection, it’s not even taught in the Greek or Hebrew scriptures. God’s love is much bigger and more powerful than you ever imagined.

Dare to question. It could be the best decision of your life.

Critic reviews

“Such a book as this is seriously needed to liberate people for a loving God!” (Fr. Richard Rohr, O.F.M., author of Falling Upward and Immortal Diamond)

“The traditional view of hell is highly contestable. If you're ready to venture into some new territory, Bible in hand, you'll find Julie Ferwerda to be a wise, patient, and intrepid guide in Raising Hell.” (Brian McLaren, author of A New Kind of Christianity)

"Raising Hell vigorously challenges those who would twist the New Testament message of love, hope, and forgiveness into a message of fear, and if you permit it, it just might transform your entire understanding of authentic Christianity." (Thomas Talbott, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Willamette University and author of The Inescapable Love of God)

Hell of a good book.

Julie has expertly done the research on what "hell" really is and what it isn't.

A wonderful message

This is a great contribution to the conversation on hell and universal reconciliation. Many books on this topic are written by pastors, Bible scholars, seminary professors and other “professional Christians.” This book is unique because provides a layperson’s perspective. Julie is a true believer, seeking truth, searching the scriptures, and following Jesus with all her heart, and it shows. She’s definitely done her homework on this subject, and her discovery of the most beautiful gospel has had a transforming effect on her life. Highly recommended!
