About this listen

Fun and disturbing. Packed with stunning, scenic writing, and a healthy dose of the undead!

When Hector James, an aspiring journalist, arrives at a small guesthouse in central Vietnam, he meets an old woman with a story to tell that might just give him the break he needs.

Hector and a motley company of guests join the elderly woman on a mission to find and exhume her brother's remains from a nearby island. However, little do they know that this isolated outpost was home to one of the most brutal and tragic battles of the Vietnam War.

As the group venture deep into the wilderness, the mysteries of the forgotten island, like the jungle around them, grow ever darker and more twisted. Will they succeed in their mission? Will Hector or any of his team make it off the island alive?

One thing is for certain. Finding out will be a war....

Zombies

it was refreshing to read a new type of zombie story. The Narrator was very good and helped to enhance the experience of being in Vietnam.

Remortalised!

This was a fast-paced and enjoyable read. I have read a lot of books in the zombie genre, but this was a very unique take on that idea. A quote from the book that summarizes it up pretty well: "Zombie Groundhog Day"!

Hector is a journalist who writes travel articles, so when he and his Australian friend, Allie, arrive at a remote guesthouse in Vietnam, he just expects to find some interesting items to (hopefully) incorporate into an article. When another group arrives, they learn that the older woman of the group is going to a nearby island to find her brother's bones, Hector gets the idea to accompany these women on their quest.

Little does he know that this island is the site of a horrific battle 50 years before during the "Vietnam War". The group soon discovers that not only are the bones still there, but some sort of zombie/ghost hybrid form of those killed in the battle are reliving that horrific event every day.

The narrator added a lot to the book and moved the action along perfectly. My only complaint about the book is that in listening to an audiobook, it was a little hard to follow the time jumps. All in all, I would recommend this to anyone who wants to have a quick horror fix that is definitely unique.

A Vietnamese Valhalla

You know, not knowing what to expect when you get a new book is thrilling, exciting, maybe makes you a little nervous. Going in with expectations and getting them blown out of the water is bone-jarring. You start off with what feels like another zombie book, nothing wrong with that by the way, zombies rule; and you end up with something you've never seen before.

The only flaw I can find with this book is that it isn't long enough. Seriously. The narration is great and the tale is something akin to you walking along in the tall grass and getting tackled from behind by a tiger. You knew it was dangerous out there, you were willing to take the risk certain that if you stuck to the path you'd be safe, but then the path took you deep into tiger territory before you realized it and then WHAM, it got you. That is Remortalised in a nutshell. A mission to reclaim some remains turns into an eternal zombie war, one in which the dead rise each day and begin their grudge all over again.

This is a brilliant idea, executed as if written by a razor sharp guillotine. My only issue? I needed more.

Honestly, this is an interesting, eye-popping, jaw-dropping, grave-stopping story that grips you with an iron hand by the hair and drags you kicking and screaming into the night. If you like horror, zombies, or just plain great story telling get this book.

Interesting new take on zombies

This was my first book from AJ Roe and I will most likely check out more from him. I’ve read a ton of zombie stories, but they are almost always the same plot. Finally, one that has a unique twist and new story. No more just mindless zombies with no purpose but to eat anything in their path. They are destined to live out their final days from the war over and over. Each day they wake and believe that the war is still going and don’t get in their way or you could end up joining them. I loved that it was so different from all the others out there and it really draws you into everything. I finished it in just 2 days. I definitely recommend to anyone looking for something different that has unique location , supernatural plot with zombies. You won’t be disappointed.
