About this listen

Emma Spire is the daughter of the assassinated Surgeon General of the United States. She has been on the cover of every national magazine. Her beauty, her brains, her bravery - all are public property. Everyone wants a piece of her - and she must escape the feeding frenzy at all costs. But she cannot, and the consequences are deadly.

Thus the stage is set for Dr. Alan Gregory's most stunning, brain-teasing crisis yet. The Colorado-based psychologist-sleuth must solve a case of twisted desire and terror to save not only a golden girl pursued by the furies of fame but also his wife, Boulder County D.A. Lauren Crowder, imprisoned on suspicion of murder. For it was Lauren who took Emma under her wing, and it was Lauren who pulled the trigger on the mysterious stalker who menaced Emma's safety and sanity.

Step by step, amid accelerating acts of terror, Alan Gregory suspects he may be dealing not with a sick mind fixated on a fantasy of female perfection but with deadly greed fueled by a high-tech prize that may be worth billions. Meanwhile, his investigation is turned into a desperate race against time as a medical emergency threatens to turn his wife's incarceration into a death sentence.

Good story. Terrible narrator

I absolutely hate Hill's portrayal of female characters. NOT enjoyable!
Story was entertaining as usual. Emma not quite a believable character - strong woman referring to her "daddy"?

5 Stars for a Great Story

I loved this book. I have it on Kindle too, but I love Dick Hill as a reader. I really like the Alan Gregory novels and grab them up as soon as they are published.

Kind of annoying

I havent listenwd to an Alan Gregory book in a while, but i liked all of them. somehow found rhis one annoying....the characters irked me and seemed to be whiney and kept secrets they shouldn't have. I'll still try the next one, but this was fore sure my least favourite of this series.

Lots of elements

The story meanders at first so benignly then the reader finds themselves scratching their head as the characters are thrust into unfathomable situations. Just when you think you have it figured out ... you don't.

"It's complicated."

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Fewer annoying characters and a less incredible plot. The Emma character was especially irritating: a self-absorbed whiner. I had trouble understanding the other characters' empathy for her. And, I thought if I heard "It's complicated" one more time, I'd run screaming into the night.

What do you think your next listen will be?

More crime fiction

What does Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He's an excellent narrator; I've listened to many of his books. To me, the spoken story is superior to the merely read one.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Sam Purdy's wry humor.

Any additional comments?

Mr. White should return to writing about quirky Mormons. Much better novel fodder there...
