Publisher's summary

Admiral John "Black Jack" Geary must battle dangers both within and without the Alliance in this exciting continuation of the New York Times bestselling series.

Geary knows that some political factions in the Alliance were just trying to get rid of him when he was assigned to escort a diplomatic and scientific mission to the far reaches of humanity's expansion into the galaxy . . . and beyond. But he views his mission as both a duty and an opportunity to make things better wherever he can. And when a crippled Rift Federation ship tumbles out of jump space, Geary leaps into action. But the survivors' story isn't completely adding up.

As Geary investigates, he soon finds himself fending off spies and assassins while leading the fleet as it fights its way across space controlled by the mysterious and hostile aliens whom humans call enigmas. Challenges arrive at every turn, including an unknown alien species that invites the fleet to visit one of their star systems. With little information to go on, Geary must weigh the benefits of potential new allies against the possibility of a trap. The fate of the fleet—and perhaps even the future of humanity—will depend on him making the right decision.

If he can stay alive long enough to do that.

A great story of first contact

Another great book in this series. It still continues to remain consistent in good quality and still makes you think about the puzzle-situations.

great story

I enjoy the way Christian Rummel portrays the characters. His voice is very versatile, and he brings the characters to life wonderfully. Excellent storytelling!

worth the wait

Love this series! So happy the next came out. Narrator does a great job. My only complaint is that there's so much time between books, but I'd rather wait for a good book than have a bunch of drivel pumped out 4 times a year.
Always something new happening, new friends, new enemies, new circumstances & of curse some action, tho this one had less fighting/action than most others. Seemed more centered about figuring things out, plots, diplomacy, chains of command & politics. Doesn't matter, still keeps you engaged & guessing what's going to happen next & sad to see it over so soon!

if you made it this far, you know what to expect

formula followed.
good narration, lots of conspiracies and intrigues, some very detailed battles, Admiral Geary remains a paragon, his wife remains weirdly demure but also bloodthirsty, the plot moves forward an inch, on to the next volume...

A little disappointed by this one.

Overall, a good story, but I didn’t get much out of this one compared to the previous books. Not a big fan of internal sabotage plots, much like a previous book’s attempt(s), and there was a lot less action than previous books. Adding to this, I didn’t like how the true perpetrators came back to the fleet, feeling more like a repeat than anything new. A revenge plot from those that made the Black Ships would have been preferable. More so, the new aliens felt like an excuse just to get Geary away from said sabotage plot so it could sort itself out. At least having the humans jump into the lake just to get a rise out of said aliens would have been worth the sub-plot, but oh well.

Rummel’s performance was also different, enough to somehow distract me, and I can’t really explain why; perhaps a different microphone? If it was a better microphone, it had somehow, again, distracted me from the story, and actually detracted from my enjoyment. Strange how better audio quality can do that to a listener, or perhaps it’s just me. Then again, getting used to listening to how someone narrates a series of books, only for it to change at enough of a degree to be noticeable, may be a thing to human psychology.

Another Great Book

Absolutely loved this book. The Lost Fleet Series is excellent and this book continues that tradition. I hope this is not the last Lost Fleet Book! The story is well done. Action and intriguie is well balanced. I don't want to give anything way, but you will Love Ensign Duck! If you have not read the entire series, I highly recommend you do so.

Proper military space opera

The protagonists are a bit do-goody strategerists, but that’s part of the fun. The space battles are tactical, and the politics/subterfuge are entertaining.
