About this listen

Avalon was the flagship of the Castle Federation in the last war, now 20 years past. The first of the deep space carriers, no other warship in the fleet holds as many honors or has recorded as many kills. No other warship in the fleet is as old. Accepting the inevitable, the Federation Space Navy has decided to refit her and send her on a tour of the frontier, showing the flag to their allies and enemies as a reminder of her glory - and then decommission her for good.

But Avalon has been a backwater posting for 10 years and has problems a mere refit can't fix. The systems along her planned tour have been seeing pirates for the first time in decades, and there are rumblings of Commonwealth scouting ships all along the border. It may be Avalon's final tour, but it looks to be anything but quiet.

really enjoyed this book

Great action . The story never lags and has enough character building moments to hold it all together. will we ever find out what the crew does next?

At first, I did not think I was gonna like the book but the story got better and better as it went. I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to book 2.

The way things are

So many books from the past decade have shoehorned sexuality into them where it provides nothing other than to say, "Look, we have a gay character!!!" It's a red flag to me that means the story is at risk of becoming secondary to political messaging for an author, so I normally stop listening once it hits certain criteria.

This one hits that criteria with:
1. Is a fairly under developed primary character
2. No other romantic relationships for any other primary characters
3. Appears to have nothing to do with the story going on outside of itself
5. Interest is immediately reciprocated from almost unknown side character even though no discussion has ever taken place between characters (no way they would have known they also were gay or bi)

I really enjoy the overall world and story prior to this point. Maybe I'll finish the book at some other time and, hopefully, the character's sexuality doesn't become a constant "in your face" like so many other stories; but for now I'll find something else. Too many bad recent listens have me on edge with seemingly random sexuality inserts like this.

Excellent Series for Military Space fans

What did you love best about Space Carrier Avalon?

Author does an excellent job of building his characters, equipment and science. It is believable, and he apparently did his homework regarding the physics involved. Unlike some reviews, the descriptions of characters physical appearance helps to build a picture of what they look like, as well as what is going on when things start getting rough. Very well thought out, original work. I highly recommend it to anyone liking good, well developed storylines and characters.

What did you like best about this story?

Author develops his characters and the social structure of 800 years in the future, and doesn't make it an issue or "preaching". He simply has extrapolated what goes on today to a future society. That is all a good sci fi writer can do, and is right along with Heinlein's work.

What does Eric Michael Summerer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Outstanding story teller, all the characters are unique, clear, and his females are feminine, and males are males. There is no confusion as to who is speaking, and what is said.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No, just enjoyed a well written story that was very well read.

Any additional comments?

Excellent series, will love to see it continue.

Excellent Space Opera

A very good Sci-fi tale. With love, tragedy, honor, and all the complexities of life and living it.
Michael Summerer was spot on as narrator.

An average story

I came to this book after having read many of the Starship’s Mage series from Stewart. This story lacks the tension, conflict, and character development of that series. It definitely feels like the work of a promising author just starting out. It’s decent but nowhere near as developed as the author’s other series.
