Another homerun for Rain Oxford

I have loved every book in the Elemental series. I tend to love female heroines and so these books give me a whole new perspective from a male's point of view. I really enjoy Devon's passion. level-headedness and tendency to rush in to help anyone and everyone. This book doesn't take place at Quintesence like the other books but instead at a school for younger paranormals. I love that Henry and Darwin are still Devon's awesome sidekicks.

Todd Menesses does an excellent job as a narrator throughout these books. He has quite a range of voices and he does them to perfection.

I was given this book for free in exchange for an honest review. And this is my honest review. Believe me I could not have gotten all the way to book 6 unless I totally loved this series - which I do!

Not as good as the others.

I really enjoyed the first 5 books. This one I found left me easily distracted. Where the others I couldn’t put down, with this one almost anything was a reasonable distraction. It was just very different and seemed to bounce around in the story.
However I am looking forward to number 7. Everyone is entitled to a ho-hum once and awhile.

Enough!

I really enjoyed this series but this is one book too many. The author needs to move on and do better with one of her other series. This was my favorite of her profligate series and I wish she could produce the same quality (for my taste ) in one of her 3 or 4 other series!

Revenant's Call

Revenents Call is the 6th book in the elemental series. I was quite excited to see the new book pop up on my available list. Usually when it's been over a year since I've read the last book in a series, then I will reread to so I can become acquainted with the characters again. I didn't do that this time and instead just jumped into this book. It wasn't hard to follow, but I did have a foggy memory on who Henry's wizard was and how Dr. Martin fit into the story. By the end of the book I'd had a few "I remember now" moments. However, I would recommend refreshing your memory if it's been awhile since you read Book 5.

In this book, Devon starts his job as Deputy Headmaster (or Assistant Principal as we call it in the U.S.) of the Children's School of Magic. I like that the author gives you a few mysteries to follow. It's definitely a busy novel with multiple pieces moving. Personally, I like novels with multiple arcs and story lines. The author gives you enough of each to keep you interested and does a good job of not making the reader feel overwhelmed.

There is a good mix of humor and even a short love scene.

Of course the readers are introduced to a slew of new characters between the children and the staff of the school. But in addition, Devon encounters a clan of Fae, the new council members, a couple new clients, and family members of some of the main characters that are new to the series.

Most of the mysteries are solved by the end of the book, but some are cliff hangers, and right before the end there is another big discovery. It was very entertaining to me. I listened to this book all in one day.

The narrator for this audio book was Todd Menesses. I love how he portrays Darwin and Henry. To me, those characters are spot on. I use to find his voice for Devon a bit stuck up. But then you find out that Devon is stuck up 😂 So it fits perfectly.

There are a few things that caught my attention or seemed a bit off such as:

If Darwin is engaged then why is he still talking like he is never leaving home... why isn't there any talk of wedding plans?

And then there's Devon giving his deepest secrets to every person who will listen. He constantly tells people how he thought his vampire-best friend killed his dad... he tells that story at least three times in this book. Two of those times he told the story to kids.

Henry completely breaks character in this book. He has been portrayed as a someone who controls his emotions and can keep cool under pressure. Somewhat randomly, this book sees him freak out and run away. The explanation given doesn't really make sense and then he contradicts himself later in the story. I'm not sure what the author intending with this part of the story but it didn't quite fit.

Overall, I enjoyed Revenants Call for its suspense and drama.

3 Stars - Good Book. I like the overall concept and it was delivered well. Most common ranking for a book I enjoyed and look forward to the next.
