About this listen
Rotherweird is a twisted, arcane murder-mystery with shades of Deborah Harkness, Hope Mirrlees and Ben Aaronovitch, Mervyn Peake and Edward Gorey at their disturbing best.
The town of Rotherweird stands alone - there are no guidebooks, despite the fascinating and diverse architectural styles cramming the narrow streets, the avant-garde science and offbeat customs. Cast adrift from the rest of England by Elizabeth I, Rotherweird's independence is subject to one disturbing condition: nobody, but nobody, studies the town or its history.
For beneath the enchanting surface lurks a secret so dark that it must never be rediscovered, still less reused.
But secrets have a way of leaking out.
Two inquisitive outsiders have arrived: Jonah Oblong, to teach modern history at Rotherweird School (nothing local and nothing before 1800), and the sinister billionaire Sir Veronal Slickstone, who has somehow got permission to renovate the town's long-derelict Manor House.
Slickstone and Oblong, though driven by conflicting motives, both strive to connect past and present until they and their allies are drawn into a race against time - and each other. The consequences will be lethal and apocalyptic.
Welcome to Rotherweird!

Story
A weekly newspaper dedicated to the weird and the wonderful (but mostly the weird), The Stranger Times is the go-to publication for the unexplained and inexplicable. At least that's their pitch. The reality is rather less auspicious. Their editor is a drunken, foul-tempered and foul-mouthed husk of a man who thinks little of the publication he edits. His staff are a ragtag group of misfits. And as for the assistant editor...well, that job is a revolving door - and it has just revolved to reveal Hannah Willis, who's got problems of her own.

Dorothy Graham is dead, which is inconvenient, not least for her. Luckily, she has planned for this eventuality. Now, if any of the truly dreadful people she is related to want to get their hands on her money, they’re going to have to do so via a fiendish difficult and frankly bizarre competition of Dorothy’s devising. After all, just because you’re dead, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a last laugh at the expense of people who made your life miserable.

Story
Just a year ago, Katrina Berg was at the pinnacle of her career. She was a rising star in the AI chatbot start-up everyone was talking about, married with an adoring husband, and had more money than she knew how to spend. Then her world combusted. Her husband, Jason, was killed in a fiery car crash. Her CEO was indicted and, as the company’s legal counsel, Katrina faces tough questions as the Feds take over and lock her out of her office. The final blow is the passing of her beloved grandmother.

Excellent!
This is definitely a book for someone who likes to be told a detailed and somewhat complicated story. I loved it! The narrator was precise and delicate, gently inserting humor into a quirky narrative with truly fun characters. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of this series.

I loved this book and I recommend it to anyone who loves books similar to the author, C.S. Lewis.

editor needed
Way too long and complicated. Also, the narrator was pretty much a monotone. so, both writing and narration were in desperate need of a strong editing process.

DNF
I struggled through what I could, but the story wasn't really grabbing me. it's definitely not terrible, and I'm sure it has a very large audience, I just have so many other books I want to read and didn't want to mire myself down with a book that didn't really capture my attention. The narrator was wonderful and it's cute and quirky and mysterious.

An Excellent and Unexpected Puzzle
Never read anything like it and I have read extensively for 63 years. Bravo, Mr. Caldecott.

So boring I listen to it to fall asleep.
Just so slow and boring. I can’t tell if it’s the performance or the story. But it’s SUPER effective at putting me to sleep, so I’m giving it 5 stars.

Nearly impossible to follow
Too many irrelevant details and far too many characters- especially as many were similar sounding names. Finished but not enjoyed.
