About this listen
Book 1 - Sam Dorsey and His Sixteen Candles
Sam never liked his birthdays because not a single one of them was happy. When he turned one, he fell face-down into his birthday cake. When he turned five, he broke his left arm. When he turned seven, he broke his right arm and his left leg. When he turned 12, his house caught fire. Now Sam is about to turn 16 and he is dreading the day. The only birthday wish he has is for Jake who is the Mr. Popular of Arcadia High to even acknowledge his existence, or better yet give him a happy-birthday kiss.
But Sam knows that it's not going to happen. Or is it?
Book 2 - Sam Dorsey and His Dirty Dancing
Sam is turning 17 this year and he is being pushed towards adulthood too fast. He has a whole bunch of grown-up problems on his hands now. Like how to make a distant relationship with your boyfriend work? Or how to stop yourself from cheating on your boyfriend with a hot friend who wants to be more than friends? Or how to detach yourself from your parents and follow your dreams independently? But all that is just too much for a 17-year-old to handle. So Sam finds himself gravitating towards Eric, a little daredevil who introduces him to fun things, like stealing, lying, drinking, smoking, and having sex.
But we know that things like that can lead you into trouble. Sam doesn't know about that though, and he is headed towards a disaster. Somebody is just going to have to show him the right way.

It’s January 1995, and Franny Banks has just six months left of the three-year deadline she set for herself when she came to New York, dreaming of Broadway and doing "important" work. It's not easy for a young gay artist like Jordan Carson to grow up in Jefferson, Wisconsin, where all anyone seems to care about in middle school and high school are the sports teams. But Jordan was lucky. He met Owen Nelson in the second grade, and they've been BFFs ever since. Owen is a big, beautiful blond and their school's champion wrestler. No one messes with Owen, or with anyone close to him, and he bucks popular opinion by keeping Jordan as his wingman even after Jordan comes out at school.

Amazing John-Hughes-inspired story
Would you listen to Sam Dorsey and Gay Popcorn (DoubleEdition) again? Why?
Absolutely. I read all the books in the series and now I was very happy to listen to them in audio. I just love Sam and his adventures. Waiting for the 3rd book now to come in audio.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I guess Mitch, because he is just adorable, a perfect boyfriend. Although in the second book I kinda started liking Jake as well.
Have you listened to any of Joel Leslie’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Nope, first time listening to this narrator. His performance was okay, but his voice got a little raspy in certain parts which made him sound older, not a teenager. It was a little distracting because I experienced a disassosiation with the mental picture I had in mind. But he was okay and made me giggle a few times.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I did listen to each book in one sitting, together it took me 2 days to listen through.

Not Sure How I feel about it.
What did you like best about Sam Dorsey and Gay Popcorn (DoubleEdition)? What did you like least?
The story is cute in a gay-by-John-Hughesy kind of way, but I feel like it was a bit heavy on the sexuality for a YA Fiction book. I understand how it works in the mind of a teenager (I was one once), but I think it's a bit much.
The best part of it was the way the book was written, in a stream-of-consciousness kind of way. I enjoyed that, and the way things are worded and written I related to very well.
Would you be willing to try another one of Joel Leslie’s performances?
No. No one needs to stagger their. words.... That. much.
Do you think Sam Dorsey and Gay Popcorn (DoubleEdition) needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No. Its fine as a standalone.

Oh my god I loved Jake from the beginning
I loved Jake from the beginning, and even after he got with the other guy I still was like “NOOO. I LOVE JAKE”
Then he ended up with Jake again and I was like “YES I KNEW IT.”
The one thing I really wish was different was I wish there was some parts I could’ve jerked off to. Some parts where it really got into detail in sex and everything, but there wasn’t really any sex parts. But when he kissed Jake even while dating the other guy, back in the woods, just letting it all melt away and say he loves him back, I started jerking my cock myself because those lines were so sensual and I was waiting, waiting, waiting for him to be like that with Jake. It was so real and passionate I couldn’t help but to get hard, and in turn, jerk right then and there.
The one thing I kinda saw throughout the whole thing was that sometimes the narrator mixed his voices. Like he’d go from voicing one person to narrating and it would be the same voice, and I saw it a couple times, so I just wish he was a bit more careful, but other from that, I was actually sitting there with my mouth agape at some of the performances of the voices. They were really good, and he did like multiple. All really great impressions.
This should be a movie. It could be a TV show, but I think a movie would be more fitting. And a book. It should be both.
The time travelling gay guy and his cowboy boyfriend, which is also by this narrator, should be a TV show and movie 100% though.
The narrator is really good at what he does. Don’t stop making stories or doing these. Please.
I also really love them and I need your amazing gay stories.

Super cute feel-good fun.
What made the experience of listening to Sam Dorsey and Gay Popcorn (DoubleEdition) the most enjoyable?
I really liked the narrator. The entire book is in the first person and he does a great job of capturing Sam's wry personality, indecision and adorkable cluelessness. He draws you into the story and the characters.
Who was your favorite character and why?
It would be pretty tough not love Mitch... but I can see why Sam has a pretty tough time choosing... we should all have such problems.
What does Joel Leslie bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Great humor, personality and an endearing vulnerability. I look forward to more in the series, hopefully with him as the narrator.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Birthday Blues
Any additional comments?
Light, fun and heartwarming.

Teenage Drama and Angst Meets 80s Romance Movies
Teenage drama and angst meets 80s romance movies…and it’s an interesting mix of highs and lows for me. There were points where I was utterly charmed and quite enjoyed the book, but then there were points that had me cringing and mouthing “what?” as the scene unfolded. I didn’t really like Sam Dorsey as a person, but that’s because I found him self-centered and selfish…but he was consistent and he did act like a pretty typical teenager with his selfish and self-centered behavior. There was a lot of drama and agonizing over love interests, but that fit with the whole homage to 80s romance movies. Overall, this wasn’t a bad bundle of stories, and I think a younger reader than myself might find them more interesting.
Joel Leslie did an AMAZING job with the narration. He put so much emotion and energy into his performances and I absolutely loved listening to him.

Fun and Funny!
Sixteen Candles
So very, very funny. This series is my favorite Perie Wolford, he so gets the teen-scene of that time period. Just marvelous.
You can actually purchase this first book in audio performed by Michael Pauley. His fans are definitely going to want to check this one out as he's seen quite a bit of growth as a narrator in the past five years. Bonus: he actually sings two songs!
Dirty Dancing
Really great series for fans of the '80s. Perie Wolford is very funny and does a terrific job parodying Dirty Dancing and I'd love to see this one as a film 😁. Purchased in audio as the "Double Edition", the narrator is Joel Leslie.

Awwwwwwww. Great for a light summer smile.
What made the experience of listening to Sam Dorsey and Gay Popcorn (DoubleEdition) the most enjoyable?
I think the narrator - and I also just thought the entire thing was just kind of light and sweet. It's kind of like getting to have a gay teen get to be the lead in Clueless or Legally Blonde or one of those fun 'popcorn' flicks that are just a fun, relaxing, guilty pleasure.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Sam - he's endearing but totally clueless. I think that almost every gay guy wishes they'd had something fun like this to read when they were a teen - and certainly wished they'd been in the marvelous Hollywood dream-tastic alternate reality of having two hot high school guys making his head spin. Molly Ringwald gets the gay spin - it's fun.
Which scene was your favorite?
I think it's the end of the second book.... you totally kind of see what's going to end up happening - but when I read it I actually teared up a little bit. For everybody who's a romantic it just kind of makes you want so bad to have had that when you were Sam's age.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Sam needs to come out of his shell... But his birthdays are always a major blow out... and we don't mean the candles.

like the ebook
The story is always full stars, because if I wouldn't like the story as ebook, I wouldn't listen to the audiobook.
The performance from the narrator is also very important for me. I can't listen to a lot, because my English as a non-native-speaker isn't so perfect to follow a whole story over hours, when the narrator speaks too fast or too sloppy. Normally I have to SEE the person, who is talking to me in English. It took me a little bit, to come into the narrator, but at the end, it worked. I only have to take a few breaks between. I'm just not yet finish with the book, but I listen enough to give a review.
PLEASE READ MY RATING SYSTEM!!!
To my ratings:
5* - very very good
it's like an A+
4* - very good and will be often re-listening
it's like an A
3* - it's more then a one-time-listening, but not more then twice a year.
it's like a B
