About this listen

Throughout her acclaimed writing career, Julie Garwood has captivated readers with characters who are compelling, daring, and bursting with life. Now one of the most popular novelists of our time proudly returns to her beloved historical romance roots in a thrilling tale of love, murder, adventure, and mystery set against the haunting landscape of medieval Scotland.

For Princess Gabrielle of St. Biel, Scotland is a land of stunning vistas, wild chieftains, treacherous glens, and steep shadows: skullduggery, betrayal, and now murder. Prized for her exquisite beauty, the daughter of one of England's most influential barons, Gabrielle is also a perfect bargaining chip for a king who needs peace in the Highlands: King John has arranged Gabrielle's marriage to a good and gentle laird. But this marriage will never take place.

For Gabrielle, everything changes in one last burst of freedom, when she and her guards come upon a scene of unimaginable cruelty. With one shot from her bow and arrow, Gabrielle takes a life, saves a life, and begins a war.

Within days, the Highlands are aflame with passions as a battle royal flares between enemies old and new. Having come to Scotland to be married, Gabrielle is instead entangled in Highland intrigue. For two sadistic noblemen, underestimating Gabrielle's bravery and prowess may prove fatal. But thanks to a secret Gabrielle possesses, Colm MacHugh, the most feared man in Scotland, finds a new cause for courage. Under his penetrating gaze, neither Gabrielle's body nor heart is safe.

A gripping novel that delves into the heart of emotion, unyielding passions of love, hate, revenge, and raw desire, Shadow Music is magnificent gift from Julie Garwood and a crowning achievement in her amazing career.

I loved this book, but then again I love all of Julie Garwood's books. I wish you had more of her historical romances which are my favorites.

Julie Garwood was such a wonderfully talented author. She knew how to create stories, create characters that were fun, likable, and entertaining. I have all her romance novels and they are all great. It would be hard to chose one favorite.
I’m so said to hear of her passing. Rest in Peace, Ms. Garwood. Thank you for sharing your talent with the world. You will be missed.

Another great book

I enjoyed listening to this audio book again. I re-listen to most of Julie Garwood's books like I used to reread them. The narrator Rosalyn Landor did an excellent job of all the different voices. Sometimes I even forgot I was listening to a woman narrating. She's that good. Definitely worth a credit.

Great

I waited a long time to read this book because of the negative reviews. I should have known better. I've enjoyed every book I ever read from Julie Garwood. This was a good story with mystery, action and romance. Not my favorite in the series (Ransom was my favorite), but enjoyable and worth my credit.

I shouldn't have hesitated

What made the experience of listening to Shadow Music the most enjoyable?

I enjoyed the story and characters. It was well written although I would have liked it better if it had moved along more quickly. I think I would have preferred an abridged version.

What other book might you compare Shadow Music to and why?

It's similar to several books in part, but when brought together in a comprehensive novel by a talented author like Julie Garwood ,with it's own twists and turns, it becomes an original.

Which character – as performed by Rosalyn Landor – was your favorite?

Princess Gabrielle of St. Biel. She's everything you could want in a heroine, beautiful inside and out, kind, resourceful, expert archer, good horsewoman, protective of those she cares for.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I don't think the title fits the book, a more descriptive tag line might read: mayhem and violence in the Scottish Highlands

Any additional comments?

There was a lot of facets to this book, but it was not disjointed. It flowed smoothly although slowly at times.

I'm glad I listened to it. You get a lot for a credit.

It's Loooong!

Really good book

First I must say as this series comes to an end that I was rivited by every story. Now, aside from the entire series, this book, WOW!!! So much emotion, drama, strength. I LOVE LOVE LOVE a book with a strong heroine, I hate a weak woman, well, this one can take on the world and does!

I will listen to this series over and over again. Of course, Rosalyn Landor did an excellent job, as always!

The writing is mature, captivating and makes it difficult for anyone to talk to me while I'm listening. It is difficult for me to talk about this book without revealing because there is so much in every page. This is a must read series! Julie Garwood has done it again.

WOW!!!!! So much packed in to this one.

Liked the story a lot, however at the end when the protagonist is kidnapped she becomes a wimp by depending on her husband to come get her. The story leaves her with no alternative.
Good story though.

Strong women

Garwood and Landor do it again, delivering another romance-adventure with heroic highlanders, evil barons, a beautiful heroine and a love story filled with passion and mischief.

Though the story lines follow predictable characters and events, we have come to love hearing them as many times as we can find new ones.

Another winner

A romantic story taking place in early English history.v A rather too sweet heroine becomes the love interest of a powerful, gruff Highland laird.
