About this listen

The Northmen are coming and they seek vengeance.

After accompanying his father to a Slavic settlement to investigate strange tales of the undead, Viking Folkvarr discovers that - not only do the dead walk - the whole forest seems to want his kind dead. When his father is kidnapped by the magical rusalka maidens, there's only one person who can help, but Vikings and Slavs just don't mix....

Ever since her parents were slaughtered by Vikings, Agna has feared and hated the Northmen. When a voldak attacks her in the woods, she realizes the dead are much more terrifying than Vikings. Putting aside the hate and distrust, she decides to help a young Viking, and stop the madness invading her home.

With generations of dislike running through their veins, Folkvarr and Agna must embrace their growing desire, and work together to save both of their people from the rising dead. But sometimes, love isn't enough, and it can't stop what's about to come.

Sink your teeth into this YA dark fantasy, filled with Vikings, romance, fantasy, and monsters, in 9th Century Kiev. Fans of the Leigh Bardugo's Grisha Trilogy will fall in love Shadows of Kiev.

another intricately built world!

Eliza Tilton has an extraordinary gift for world building. This is my second book I've listened to by her and I'm just as impressed as the first.
In this story she weaves a tale of Vikings and Slavics, mystical beings, witches, undead and more!
I'm not sure if there will be a book two, but I need more of Folkvarr, Agna and Cole.

Matyas is a new narrator for me and while he did a good job I was missing the addition of a female voice. I would listen to another of his narrations for comparison. I tend to have higher expectations for male narrators in this genre, which isn't a reflection on him!

Great book

I writing my honest review this is not my normal listen or read. For me it started out slow but as you get further in the book it gets really good! I want to know what happens next. I felt even though it was slow it was necessary for the build up very worth it and narration was amazing loved the flexibility he had!!

Wonderful Viking Book

Captivating enemies to lovers romance with a Viking twist

Cursed Dead Men Walking...Battle-Scarred...Sacred Willow...Water Spirits...Magic...Witches

This Viking interpretation captured me from the beginning. I love the detailed character descriptions and intricate world building. This is a true enemies to lovers romance filled with sacrifice, loss, devotion, trust, and love.

Would you be willing to sacrifice yourself for those who have wronged you? Sometimes the price seems too high to pay.

Have faith. Choose to have hope. Love has no bounds.

Arresting Dark Fantasy

Eliza Tilton has written a dark fantasy in which a young Viking named Folkvarr must work with a young Slav girl named Agna in order to overcome voldak, the living dead. The story held my interest and was entertaining. There were great characters, monsters, magic, and some great fight scenes. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. I recommend it to those who enjoy books that are found in the dark fantasy genre. Matyas Job Gombos' narration was excellent, and his style held my attention. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily left this review.

Interesting premise, not the best execution

I thought I would really enjoy this book based on the premise, but I was disappointed. I received this audiobook for free for my review. I felt the writing was stilted and didn’t flow well. The story was not as fleshed out as I would have liked it to be. It felt like the plot was driven along too easily and I found myself bored at parts, which seemed strange for a zombie-Viking type story. The only character I liked in this book was Cole (the mythological creature Leshy). He was the only enjoyable aspect of the book for me. I felt like this story had promise but just did not deliver. Because I liked Cole, if there was a story just about him or even a book two about Cole and Agna I would probably listen to it, even though I didn’t like the first one, just for Cole.
