About this listen

Watch Silo, the Apple TV+ series based on the bestselling Silo Saga!

The second volume in the New York Times bestselling Silo series. Hugh Howey goes back to show the first days of the Silo, and the beginning of the end.

In 2007, the Center for Automation in Nanobiotech (CAN) outlined the hardware and software platforms that would one day allow robots smaller than human cells to make medical diagnoses, conduct repairs, and even self-propagate.

In the same year, the CBS network re-aired a program about the effects of propranolol on sufferers of extreme trauma. A simple pill, it had been discovered, could wipe out the memory of any traumatic event.

At almost the same moment in humanity’s broad history, mankind discovered the means for bringing about its utter downfall. And the ability to forget it ever happened.

Loved it

Great second book! The beginning of the book is kind of odd because you expect it to pick up where it left off from the first book but it doesn’t. But then it all ties in at the end and it’s fantastic.

Provocative

This book makes me question organizations, institutions, power in general. Authorities are meant to be questioned and regulated or else we too could end up like this. If we aren’t already.

Great story

I can usually predict what direction a story is moving. Not this one. I was totally surprised. Great book.

Well done!

I had wondered if was necessary to read this book before moving on to the final. It’s a vital piece of the story. It’s devastating at times, but there are beautiful moments and answers to mysteries. My eyes got a bit wet when an old friend was laid to rest and I laughed out loud at the end. Thank you to the author, narrator, and everyone involved.

Better than expected!

With books and TV shows I generally hate when in the middle of a story a prequel or time jump back happens. It usually break the story up and although important information I’m always like why didn’t it just start there in the first place. That said this was a generally intriguing glimpse into the ones who conceived and first occupied the silos and although the time span is hundreds of years, the nature of the story and whole storyline is brought into where you left off at the end of the first book, kind of tying everything together in a way that some prequels don’t. I’m about to get the third book in the series and I think as a whole work they’re amazing.

Great sequel to Wool

Really enjoyed this book. Thought it provided a lot of background for what happens in Wool while moving the story along.

Great!! Just one thing

Fantastic story!! Only complaint is that it was a bit confusing in the beginning with the back and forth.

The bad guys aren't all bad

Just finished this one last night, and though it doesn't have much of Juliette, it's still tremendous. I love the backstory of Solo, who is officially my favorite character in the series. He's so complex, and so full of goodness, despite doing the hard things he must to simply survive. Lots of jumping back in forth in time in this one, so pay attention. As with Book One, so many thoughtful details and moments that show the depth of these characters. Howey definitely understands the human heart.

The villains of Wool get the spotlight in Shift, and we learn how they all came into their present roles. It's not a spoiler to say that you will definitely come away from this story wondering who the bad guys really are, for it's not as cut and dried as it seems after you finish the first book. Even Anna, whom I couldn't stand in Wool, becomes harder to dislike.

As others have noted, Shift answers many questions readers will have after reading Wool, and it is very much a prequel. Juliette does show up for a few minutes, but much and not until the end. Manage your expectations- this one is about her world and how it got to be her world, not about her. Narration is even better than in the first book.
